GLENDALE — After a week of excessive heat that forced the La Cañada High and Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy girls’ tennis teams to postpone a pair of matches, the squads finally took to the court Tuesday.
It turned out to be a season-opening match when the Spartans and Tologs met at Scholl Canyon Tennis Center.
La Cañada’s depth and experience proved to be deciding factors in a convincing 15-3 nonleague victory.
“We have a lot of depth and some very good players throughout the lineup,” said La Cañada coach Will Moravec, whose team took third in the Rio Hondo League last season and reached the CIF southern Section Division II playoffs last season. “I’m happy with the results we got today.
“It was so hot last week and it would have been miserable playing in those conditions. In a perfect world, we just wanted it to be a little cooler and finally be able to get out there and play.”
The Spartans had nonleague matches against Crescenta Valley and Arcadia postponed, while the Tologs had nonleague matches against Chaminade and Maranatha postponed.
La Cañada got a sweep from junior No. 1 singles player Sophie McKenzie. McKenzie, the reigning All-Area Girls’ Singles Player of the Year who advanced to the CIF Individuals Tournament after finishing runner-up in league, didn’t lose a game.
The Spartans also got singles victories from Annabelle Kevakian (6-0, 6-1, 6-1) and Nicole Sun (6-1).
In doubles, La Cañada got one win from Ashley Chun and Sydney Wong (6-4), one from Chun and Solenn Matsuka (6-0), Matsuka and Lisa Song (6-0), two wins from Sarah Settles and Elisa Wu (6-0, 6-0), two from Artis Phillips and Megan Galantai (6-4, 6-1) and one from Amanda Yu and Kelsey Warda (6-2).
“We were able to go out and play some different people and get a much better idea of what they can do and how they perform,” Moravec said. “We might have to switch some things up along the way.”
Flintridge Sacred Heart, which took fifth in the Mission League last season, got singles wins from Joelle Souma (6-2) and Georgia Wilder (6-2). The Tologs received a doubles victory from Olivia Partamian and Nala Qiao.
“We only practiced two days last week because of the heat and there wasn’t much you could do,” Flintridge Sacred Heart coach Ron Zambrano said. “We have a lot of potential and we were in position to win a couple of more sets today.
“We just need to get some more playing time and experience. That comes with practice, too. We’ll be 100% better than we are now by the end of the season.”
