Crescenta Valley and Glendale girls’ lacrosse teams head out on playoff road

A season ago, Crescenta Valley High’s girls’ lacrosse team made its first trip to the playoffs.

This season, the Falcons won their first Pacific League title and will now look to bring home their first playoff win.

Crescenta Valley will travel to face Newbury Park at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the opening round of the United States Southern Section North playoffs, while Glendale will also hit the road Tuesday to take on Redondo Union at 5.

Playoff pairings, which are determined largely by the US Lacrosse/MaxLaxLA poll, were released Sunday with first-round matches set for Tuesday.

Ninth-seeded Crescenta Valley (12-3) will streak into the playoffs on a seven-match winning streak, though only one of those victories (against Glendale) came against a team with a winning record. The Falcons, who lost to Redondo Union, 15-6, in last season’s first round, will face No. 8 Newbury Park (12-4), which finished second in the Marmonte League behind Agoura, the No. 3 seed.

If Falcons Coach Boz Crowther’s team is able to pull out its first postseason win, it would move on to Thursday’s second round to face top-seeded Chaminade (15-3) or No. 16 La Reina (8-7).

Glendale (10-6), the No. 15 seed after finishing third in the Pacific League, will travel to face second-seeded Redondo Union (12-3), the Bay League champion. The teams met on March 15 with Redondo winning in dominant fashion, 16-6.

A Nitros upset would advance them to Thursday’s second round against No. 10 Birmingham (14-5) or No. 7 Palos Verdes (11-4).

Last season, Glendale advanced to the championship final of the Division II playoffs.

This season, Glendale’s boys’ team (9-6) will take part in the boys’ lacrosse equivalent to the Division II playoffs, the boys’ invitational.

It will also play on the road Tuesday, traveling as the No. 5 seed in the eight-team tournament to No. 4 San Marcos-Santa Barbara (12-2). The winner will play top-seeded Mira Costa or Calabasas in the semifinals on Thursday.

St. Francis, which qualified for the postseason for the first time last season, ended its season at 6-13 with a 1-9 mark in the Mission League.

In girls’ lacrosse, St. Monica Academy played its inagural season and finished 2-3, according to LAXPower.com.

La Cañada’s girls’ squad finished the season at 6-8.
