SPORTS BRIEFS: Inaugural ACE Awards tonight

The first-ever ACE Awards banquet, recognizing athletes and coaches with character and ethics takes place today at the Alex Theatre, 216 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale.

Tickets for $5 are on sale at the Alex Theatre.

The event begins at 6:55 p.m.

Awards will be given out for nine high school categories and five Glendale Community College categories.

For Glendale college, awards for Coach of the Year, Women’s Athlete, Men’s Athlete, Female Team and Men’s Team will be handed out.

For high school, which consists of nominees from Crescenta Valley High, Glendale and Hoover, awards will be handed out for Female Athlete, Male Athlete, Female Scholastic Athlete, Male Scholastic Athlete, Coach of a Female Team, Coach of a Male Team, Female Team, Male Team and Spirit Team.

Glendale college track and field and cross-country Coach Eddie Lopez, men’s basketball Coach Brian Beauchemin and baseball Coach Chris Cicuto are the nominees for GCC’s Coach of the Year.

The GCC Female Team nominees are cross-country, volleyball and track and field, while the Men’s Team nominees are cross-country, basketball and track and field.

Volleyball player Ashleigh Diller, basketball player Kendra Carter and track and field athlete Shannon Azizi are up for the college’s Women’s Athlete of the Year, while Male Athlete nominees are track and cross-country runner Jonathan Alpizar, basketball player Jose Garcia and tennis player Emmanuel Haug.

Nominees for high school Female Athlete are Hoover volleyball player Sara Ortiz, Glendale swimmer Katalina Sher and CV soccer player Frances Boukidis, while the Male Athlete nominees were CV swimmer and water polo player Chris Veselich, Glendale water polo player Gor Asryan and Hoover soccer player Arman Ter Barseghyan.

Nominees for Female Scholastic Athlete are Glendale’s Sher, CV cross-country and track and field runner Eliza Collison and Hoover water polo player and swimmer Atineh Sepanian, while the Male Scholastic Athlete nominees are Glendale’s Asryan, CV volleyball player Eric Boyd and Hoover water polo player and swimmer Aryan Azarian.

In the Coach of a Female Team category, the nominees are Hoover softball Coach Rich Henning, CV basketball Coach Jason Perez and Glendale tennis Coach Bob Davidson, while the Coach of a Male Team nominees are Hoover football Coach Chris Long, Glendale water polo Coach Forest Holbrook and CV boys’ basketball Coach Shawn Zargarian.

Nominees for Female Team are Hoover softball, CV cross-country and Glendale tennis and the Male Team nominees are Hoover basketball, Glendale water polo and CV soccer.
