Bad news for Zaun

GLENDALE — The following are updates on area Major League Baseball players.

Gregg Zaun (St. Francis High, 1989) Milwaukee Brewers catcher: The Glendale native remains on the disabled list. However, he learned that his season might have come to an end after he was diagnosed with a torn labrum in the front of his right shoulder.

Mlb.com reported that the injury might end Zaun’s career.

Mlb.com reported Zaun put his chances of playing this season at “50-50” and the team doctors have recommended treatment for the next two to four weeks. Zaun’s strength and range of motion will then be reevaluated before determining if surgery is necessary. If Zaun, 39, undergoes surgery, then he’d likely be sidelined four to six months.

“I’m pretty disappointed,” Zaun, who signed last season as a free agent, told mlb.com. “Things were just starting to roll offensively. ... For this to happen now is just bad timing, as usual.”

Zaun began the season hitless in his first 21 plate appearances, but batted .333 over his next 81 at-bats to boost his average to .265 before going on the disabled list May 21.

In 28 games, Zaun collected 27 hits. Zaun has hit two home runs and driven in 14 runs and scored 11 runs for the Brewers, who are 19-28 and in fifth place in the National League’s Central Division.

Freddy Sanchez (Glendale Community College, 1998) San Francisco Giants infielder: An inadvertent spiked cleat to the face from an opposing baserunner notwithstanding, Sanchez had the best game of his young season on Thursday.

Batting two for two with two walks, two runs batted in and a run scored out of the second spot in the order, Sanchez drove in the game-winning runs in the Giants’ 5-4 win over the visiting Washington Nationals with a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The outing helped Sanchez, who has played in just eight games since coming off the disabled list on May 19 after recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, bump his batting average up from .192 to .250.

San Francisco is currently 24-22 for fourth place in the National League West Division.

Marco Estrada (Glendale Community College, 2003) Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher: The right-hander pitched an inning Thursday in Milwaukee’s 4-3 extra-inning home victory against the Houston Astros. Estrada allowed one unearned run and walked two during a 28-pitch effort.

In four appearances, Estrada is 0-0 with 5.40 earned-run average. He’s struck out seven and walked four in 8 1/3 innings.
