NORTHEAST GLENDALE — Their bid for a championship must wait one more day.
The if-necessary championship game between the Crescenta Valley and Burbank Junior All-Star Softball teams was called in the bottom of the fifth inning at Scholl Canyon Ballfields because of a 10 p.m. curfew. Crescenta Valley holds a 12-8 lead with no outs in the District 16 All-Stars Junior Softball Tournament.
District 16 Volunteer Administrator Dave Ritchie said the game will resume at 3 p.m. today at the same venue with the game being picked up where it left off Friday night. The winner will advance to the Section 2 Tournament on July 17 in Canyon Country.
"We've got the momentum right now and things are going well for us," said Crescenta Valley Coach Will Thayer, whose squad forced the if-necessary game Thursday with a 9-5 win in the championship contest. "[The curfew] is what it is and you don't complain."
Crescenta Valley, which suffered a 4-2 loss on Wednesday in the opening game, scored a pair of runs in its half of the fifth to make it 12-8. The game's three umpires agreed to suspend the game a few minutes before the facility's lights went out.
Burbank Coach Albert Hernandez said his team will look to take advantage of the ruling.
"Both teams are hitting the ball well, it's still a close game," Hernandez said.
Burbank took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a run-scoring single by Aimee Rodriguez. However, Crescenta Valley bounced back with four runs in its half of the frame.
Whitney Craig had a two-run double to make it 2-1 and Marissa Cornelius singled in a run to make it 3-1.
Burbank responded with five runs in the top of the second. Kheanna Mosley had a run-scoring single to give Burbank a 5-4 lead and Rodriguez singled in a run to make it 6-4.
After Crescenta Valley closed to within 6-5 in the second, it then spiked the plate five times in the third to build a 10-6 advantage. Crescenta Valley sent 10 batters to the plate and received back-to-back doubles from Tiffany Briscoe and Kendall Heurkins to cap the scoring in the inning.
