GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes at the collegiate level.

Jesse Meaux (Glendale High, 2007) senior pitcher, UC Santa Barbara baseball: Meaux’s lengthy ride through the 2010 National Baseball Congress World Series with his summer team, the Santa Barbara Foresters of the California Collegiate League, finished on Friday in Wichita with an 11-6 loss to the Seattle Studs in the semifinals, resulting in a tie for third place in the tournament.

Meaux did not pitch in the game, in which the Foresters fell behind by four runs in the first inning and were never able to get closer than two.

The former Nitro, who was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 44th round of the latest Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, had a great series, going 2-0 in his two starts and allowing just one earned run on five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over 12 innings pitched.

Meaux pitched the Foresters to an 8-3 win over the Haysville Heat in the quarterfinals, going six strong innings and allowing just one run on three hits while fanning three to one walk.

The Foresters went 40-9 this summer and 29-7 to take first place in the California Collegiate League.

Dustin Emmons (Crescenta Valley High, 2007) senior pitcher, UC Riverside baseball: Emmons’ summer season with the Corvalis Knights of the West Coast League came to an end on Wednesday with a 10-7 loss to the Bend Elks at Goss Stadium in Corvalis in the semifinals of the league championship tournament.

Bend had already defeated Corvalis, 3-2, on Tuesday in the first game of the best-of-three series and advanced to the championship round to face the Wenatchee AppleSox.

Emmons did not pitch in either game, but he did pick up wins in two crucial games down the stretch of the regular season, in which Corvalis finished 37-17 for first place in the West Division.

Making his final start of the season on Aug. 1, Emmons went 6 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits and four walks, but getting picked up by the Knights’ offense in a 7-5 win over the AppleSox.

On Aug. 6, Emmons relieved starter Aaron Corwin to begin the fifth inning and ended up with the win by virtue of the 3-1 lead he inherited and protected with a two-hit scoreless inning. Corvalis wound up winning the game, 7-4.

Emmons, who was drafted by the Florida Marlins with the 1,217th overall pick in the 40th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft on June 9, went 5-0 for the second straight summer as a Knight and finished the season with a 2.43 ERA in 33 1/3 innings pitched over eight appearances. He struck out 25 batters and walked 15.

Austin Heyworth (St. Francis High, 2009) sophomore quarterback, UC Davis football: Great Western Conference coaches tabbed the Aggies to repeat as conference champions in a preseason poll released on Wednesday.

Heyworth will look to earn a bigger role in UC Davis’ offense this season after appearing sparingly in four games last season. He did have one breakout performance in a backup role when he completed six of eight passes for 82 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-31 victory over Portland State on Oct. 24.
