LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE — Only three matches into the season and Flintridge Prep girls' volleyball Coach Sean Beattie has already defined his team's main strength and weakness.
While the Rebels have won all of their matches, Beattie would like to see them get up to speed on offense and have it match the customary defensive efforts that have been turned in.
"We are doing well on defense, but it's on offense where we are struggling," Beattie said following Flintridge Prep's 25-15, 25-22, 25-19 nonleague home win against Milken Community on Monday night. "We want to focus on our offense and get it up to where our defense is.
"I think we have our defense down already. We want to get our middle blockers and opposite hitters on the same page with our setter. Once we do that, I think we'll be very successful."
Flintridge Prep, which opened the season with nonleague wins against Alhambra and Temple City, received 24 assists from Casey Meurer and 10 digs apiece from Tori Glebocki and Abbey Deckop on Monday.
The Rebels also got a team-best seven kills from Kelly Wang and five kills and 12 digs from Charlotte Kay to turn back the Wildcats (0-1).
"We lost about 80% of our offense from last year to graduation," said Beattie, who got five aces from Kate Woolley. "We haven't been playing great, but well enough to win.
"We are playing at a C-plus level, and we need to be at a B-plus level. We are going to struggle later on against the big blocking teams because we just don't have the height."
Flintridge Prep jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the first game and extended the lead to 21-11 on an ace by Woolley.
In the second game, a kill by Kay gave Flintridge Prep an 18-17 advantage. The Rebels took a 24-20 lead, only to see Milken Community cut the lead to 24-22 before a hitting error gave the Rebels a two-games-to-none lead.
The Wildcats built a 7-5 lead in the third game. However, the Rebels used a 9-0 run to take a 14-7 lead.
Flintridge Prep will next participate in another nonleague home match at 4:30 p.m. today against Sierra Canyon.
