Additional honors collected by Johnson
GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes at the collegiate level.
Amanda Rose Johnson (Crescenta Valley High, 2010) freshman goalkeeper, New Mexico Highlands soccer: Things continue to get better for Johnson, a former All-Area and All-CIF standout. For the second time this month, Johnson was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week. Johnson’s latest accolade was unveiled Wednesday.
Johnson, who helped Crescenta Valley capture the Pacific League championship last season, once again proved to be a pillar for the Cowgirls, who are ranked third in the conference and fifth in the latest NCAA Central Region poll. Highlands (9-4-2, 7-2-2 in conference) won three conference matches between Oct. 13 and Sunday.
Her big week began Oct. 13, when she made six saves and didn’t yield a goal in nearly 60 minutes of action in Highlands’ 3-1 victory against visiting Adams State College. She then turned aside four of five shots to help Highlands net a 3-1 road win against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on Friday.
Johnson recorded her second shutout of the season Sunday, as she made six saves in a 2-0 road victory against Colorado School of Mines.
Johnson sports a .823 save percentage for the season and a 1.16 goals-against average, ranking her sixth in conference in each category. Johnson is 7-2-1 and has recorded two shutouts. She’s stopped 51 shots and allowed 11 goals for the Cowgirls, who will next battle Mesa State College in a conference match Friday.
Luke Collis (St. Francis High, 2007) junior quarterback, Occidental College football: The former All-Area and All-Mission League standout and the Tigers continue to remain hot. With Collis playing one of the starring roles, Occidental won its fourth game in a row Saturday.
Collis completed 11 of 15 passes for 178 yards in Occidental’s 39-26 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference home win against Pomona Pitzer College. Collis, a Nevada transfer, also tossed a pair of second-quarter touchdown passes to wide receiver Matthew Tuckness to help the Tigers improve to 4-1 and 3-0 in conference.
Collis’ first touchdown pass came when he connected with Tuckness on a six-yard pass to knot the score at 14 with 5:03 left in the first half. Tuckness then caught a 42-yard touchdown strike from Collis to give the Tigers a 21-14 lead with 1:39 remaining.
In four games, Collis has completed 75 of 121 passes for 1,029 yards. He’s thrown for 12 touchdowns and two interceptions.
Occidental will next participate in a conference contest at 2 p.m. Saturday at the University of Redlands.
Ayana Sumiyasu (Flintridge Prep, 2007) senior goalkeeper, Yale University soccer: Sumiyasu, a former All-Area and All-Pre League pick, stopped both shots she faced to help the host Bulldogs pick up a 3-0 nonconference win against Holy Cross on Tuesday. She began the game in net before being replaced by Adele Jackson-Gibson for the final 19-plus minutes.
On Saturday, Sumiyasu yielded a goal in the 14th minute in Yale’s 1-0 Ivy League road loss against Cornell.
In 12 matches, Sumiyasu has recorded 61 saves and allowed 15 goals. She has a .803 save percentage and a 1.28 goals-against average.
The Bulldogs are 6-7-1 overall and 4-2-1 in league entering Saturday’s league home match against Pennsylvania.
Cristina Lucas (Glendale resident) sophomore, Wellesley (Mass.) College cross-country: Lucas, a Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High graduate, helped the Blue finish second at the Seven Sisters Cross Country Championships at Vassar College on Saturday. The Blue finished with 33 points, one point behind Vassar.
Lucas clocked 19 minutes 11 seconds to place eighth and earn all-race accolades.
Wellesley will next host its invitational Saturday.
