Sumiyasu ends Bulldog career on high note

GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes in college.

Ayana Sumiyasu (Flintridge Prep, 2007) senior goalkeeper, Yale University soccer: The former All-Area and All-Prep League pick completed her collegiate career in style. Sumiyasu earned All-Ivy League first-team accolades after she started 16 matches and registered a 1.16 goals against average.

She finished with an .811 save percentage and recorded a pair of shutouts. Sumiyasu went 7-7-1 in net and stopped 77 shots. She yielded 18 goals in 1,393 minutes and 41 seconds.

In the Bulldogs’ final match of the season, Sumiyasu recorded three saves to help Yale pick up a 2-1 league victory against host Brown.

Sumiyasu finished her four-year career at Yale at 23-22-3 with 11 shutouts.

The Bulldogs wrapped up their season at 8-8-1 and 3-4 in league.

Yale won six of its final eight matches and has now finished with a .500 or better overall record for nine seasons in a row.

Gabe Ramirez (Crescenta Valley High, 2009) sophomore midfielder, University of Redlands soccer: Ramirez, a former All-Pacific League member, had an enjoyable second year with Redlands.

Ramirez finished the campaign with two goals and eight assists for 12 points to help Redlands capture the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship.

Ramirez earned the honor for the first time in his Redlands career. Ramirez tied for the conference lead in assists with seven. Against conference foes, he ranked in the top 10 in total points (nine), points per game (0.69), assists (seven) and assists per game (0.54).

The Bulldogs, who went 13-3-2 and 11-1-2 in conference, won the conference championship for the ninth time since 2001 and 10th time overall.

Redlands saw its season end Nov. 6 with a 1-0 loss against Claremont Mudd-Scripps in the conference’s postseason tournament title match. Ramirez had two of Redlands’ nine shots on goal.

Kalii Robinson (Glendale Community College, 2010) junior linebacker, Southern Oregon University football: Robinson, a reigning All-Western State Conference second-team member, turned in a respectable first season with the Raiders.

Robinson finished with four tackles, including three solo, in Southern Oregon’s 31-26 road loss against Northwest Oklahoma on Nov. 13.

In eight games, Robinson collected 48 tackles. He finished with 29 solo tackles and assisted on 19. He recovered one fumble for the Raiders, who finished 3-7.

The Raiders, who also feature junior offensive lineman Tanner Farwell, a former Vaquero and Crescenta Valley High graduate, recently announced that Coach Steve Helminiak will not be back in 2011.

Helminiak coached Southern Oregon the past five seasons.
