Orlandini, Dawgs host NCAAs
GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes in college.
Jenna Orlandini (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2009) redshirt freshman, University of Washington volleyball: Orlandini and the Huskies are set to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Division I Tournament, beginning on Thursday, when the Huskies will face Michigan.
Should the Huskies make it through the opening two rounds, they would advance to the Seattle Regional on Dec. 10-11. The Huskies (21-8, 10-8 in conference) have won two straight matches, sweeping Oregon on Friday and Oregon State on Saturday.
In a 25-23, 25-17, 25-18 win over Oregon State, Orlandini had a match-high 18 digs and also chipped in four assists. Against Oregon, she had 10 digs, which also tied for a match-high.
On the year, Orlandini leads Washington with 468 digs in 100 sets played. She’s also notched 58 assists and 20 aces.
Stefanie Chan (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2007) senior, Claremont McKenna College soccer: A decorated defender during her seasons at Flintridge Sacred Heart, Chan produced the same results during her tenure at Claremont.
Chan, for the second straight season, was voted to the All-Southern California Interscholastic Athletic Conference first team, as the senior out of Glendale helped the Athenas to a 10-6-4 overall record and a 6-4-2 record in SCIAC play.
Chan and her squad’s season came to an end on Nov. 3 at Occidental College in the SCIAC Tournament semifinal after falling in penalty kicks after a 1-1 stalemate.
Chan led a defense that produced six shutouts and five one-goal games.
Chan played in all 20 games for the Athenas during the past season and started in 18.
Amanda Rose Johnson (Crescenta Valley High, 2010) freshman, New Mexico Highlands soccer: Rose Johnson recently concluded a phenomenal rookies season in New Mexico, while the Cowgirls program concluded, arguably, its best season yet.
The Cowgirls made their first-ever trip to the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Tournament, but fell in the first round to Regis, 3-2, on Nov. 12.
New Mexico fell behind, 3-0, in the first half as Regis fired off 11 shots in the match. Johnson turned in shutout play for the second half, but her team’s rally fell short. She made two saves.
In the conference tournament proceeding the NCAA tourney, Johnson was named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference all-tournament team after tallying a combined 15 saves in a quarterfinal win and a semifinal loss — the latter also to Regis.
On the season, New Mexico Highlands went 12-7-2 and 9-3-2 in conference.
Rose Johnson, who picked up a pair of conference player of the week accolades during the season, finished with 17 starts in 19 games played. She allowed 19 goals for a 1.25 goals-against average in 1,366 minutes and 6 seconds played. Her 79 saves led to a .806 save percentage and a 10-4-1 record with three shutouts.
Brian Trejo (Hoover High, 2009) sophomore, San Francisco State cross-country: At Saturday’s NCAA Division II West Regional in Washington, Trejo was once more the lead runner for San Francisco State, taking 45th in the men’s 10,000 meters to lead his squad to a 10th-place finish.
Trejo crossed the finish line in 33 minutes 48.3 seconds.
In the women’s regional, former Glendale Community College standout Justina Sadauskaite was the top finisher for Cal State Los Angeles, taking 32nd in the 6K race in a time of 24:15.0.
Cal State L.A. took 15th in the race.
