Zargaryan’s double-double powers Cal State Dominguez Hills

GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes in college.

Zareh Zargaryan (Hoover High, 2007) senior forward, Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball: Zargaryan made his first start of the season count, going for 15 points and 12 rebounds in the Toros’ 53-51 nonconference victory over host Cal State L.A. on Saturday. It was his second double-double of the year.

The former All-Area mainstay made a layup to give No. 17-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills a 50-45 lead with under 5:00 left in the game. Cal State L.A. would rally to get within one with 3:49 to play, but the Toros sealed the win with a strong defensive sequence.

Zargaryan is averaging 9.4 points and four rebounds per game for the Toros (7-1).

Melia Basavand (Glendale High, 2007) senior guard, University of Albany women’s basketball: Basavand made a pair of three-pointers to help the Great Danes notch a 63-47 nonconference win over Niagra on Saturday.

The former Nitros sharpshooter has averaged 3.5 points with eight three-pointers made in eight games off the bench to help Albany get off to a 7-3 start.

Nick Dragovich (Crescenta Valley High, 2010) freshman forward, Chapman University men’s basketball: Dragovich’s Panthers are off to a blistering 9-1 start after beating Oglethorpe University, 60-57, on Saturday to run their win streak to seven straight.

In limited action, Dragovich has scored five points and recorded five rebounds this season.

Dietrich Riley (St. Francis High, 2010) freshman safety, UCLA football: Riley, the reigning News-Press Male Athlete of the Year, registered three tackles (two solo) and broke up a pass while playing safety in the Bruins’ 28-14 loss to archrival USC at the Rose Bowl on Dec. 4 in the season finale.

Riley appeared in 11 games in his first collegiate season and finished with 21 tackles (17 solo), including one for a two-yard loss.

UCLA went 4-8 this season and 2-7 in the Pacific-10 Conference for ninth place.
