Hoover nets first league win

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Hoover 62, Arcadia 60: Though the Tornadoes didn’t win a game during the first half of Pacific League competition, they began the second half on the right note Monday night with their first league win of the season.

Teo Aghazarian made a game-winning three-point shot with six seconds left for the visiting Tornadoes, who improved to 5-14, 1-7 in league.

“He was open and he had the intestinal fortitude to take and make that shot,” Hoover Coach Jack Van Patten said. “He also did well on defense.

“Not folding was nice when we were down in the third quarter. It’s like a 500-pound gorilla is off your back.”

Hoover, which trailed by 11 points in the third quarter, also received 27 points, three steals and three assists from senior Aden Ziraki.

Arbi Abelian contributed 14 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks for Hoover, which got eight points from Artin Mirzakhanyan.

Renaissance Academy 98, Environmental Charter 36: The visiting Wildcats improved to 14-6 and 2-0 in the Harbor League with a win Monday.

Pasadena 78, Glendale 38: David Yetenikyan paced the host Nitros on Monday with seven points. Glendale dropped to 8-12, 3-5 in league.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Arcadia 46, Hoover 27: The host Tornadoes got nine points from Amatia Golbodaghi on Monday in a Pacific League contest. Hoover (1-14, 0-8 in league) received six points from Jessica Mkrtchyan.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

College of the Canyons 127, Glendale Community College 59: Michelle Eclar finished with 15 points and four assists and Araceli Nieves added 13 points Saturday for the host Vaqueros in a Western State Conference contest.

The Vaqueros began the week Wednesday with a 60-44 conference road loss against West L.A. Glendale college dropped to 0-17, 0-5 in conference.
