GCC holds on to win opener

Glendale Community College 13, L.A. Harbor 10: The Vaqueros held on for a wild win in their nonconference opener on the road Thursday.

Michael Noteware notched the save, retiring the side on a sacrifice fly and two strikeouts, as he entered the ninth with the bases loaded and no outs to preserve the victory.

Nick Woodward got the win, tossing five innings of one-run ball on two hits, while notching five strikeouts.

Scott Hong had two hits, including a grand slam to aid in the Vaqueros getting out to a 12-1 lead in the fifth inning before holding on for the victory.

Sako Chapjian added two hits and four runs batted in.

MEN’S COLLEGE TENNIS

Mt. San Jacinto 5, Glendale Community College 4: Despite playing with four players absent due to testing, the Vaqueros (1-1) put up a valiant effort in a nonconference road loss to one of the top teams in Southern California.

In singles, No. 1 Alex Sarkissian won 6-1, 6-0, while No. 2 Trevor Campbell also prevailed, 6-4, 6-3. Chris Simpson also provided a hard-fought singles win in the No. 6 slot, winning, 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles, Sarkissian and Campbell teamed up for an 8-3 victory.

In the end, the match came down to Glendale having to default on one set due to injury.
