Rebels get things to fall their way

Flintridge Prep 45, Webb 26: Luck had already smiled on the Rebels earlier Friday when they won an advance coin flip against Westridge for the fourth-place tiebreaker in the Prep League.

But in order to force the tie at all, Prep had to beat Webb and hope for a Westridge loss against Chadwick Friday evening.

The former was accomplished thanks to 13 points and 10 rebounds from Kristin Shum and nine points apiece from Kimberly Kim and Katherine Bogaard. When Chadwick also won, the Rebels had an automatic berth to the CIF Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs.

"They definitely responded to the challenge," Rebels Coach Todd Frost said of his team, which finishes the regular season at 8-15 and 5-7 in league for fourth. "They didn't know the results of the flip, they didn't know what was happening at Chadwick, they only knew the thing that they could control.

"They knew that if they won there was still hope and if they lost there was none."

First-round pairings will be released Sunday afternoon.

Flintridge Prep 82, Webb 49: Kenyatta Smith (17 points) was one of five Rebels to score in double-digits in a Prep League road win that clinched a share of the league title on Friday.

"We shared [the title], obviously, with [Pasadena] Poly this year and we battled [with them], but I think we're ready to move on," said Prep Coach Garrett Ohara, whose team, currently ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division 5AA, has won or shared the league title nine of the last 10 years. "The guys closed it out and I told them they have a chance also to do something Prep's never done — enter [the playoffs] as a No. 1 seed.

"We're enjoying that, we'll celebrate tonight and then look forward to what we can do. We're also well-aware that [the] No. 3 [seed] did nothing to help us win a game last year, so we'll be ready."

Prep (18-6, 7-1 in league) also got 15 points apiece from Jedrick Eugenio and Kory Hamane and 14 each from Robert Cartwright and Jared Norsworthy.

Vaqueros take third in event: Michael Timpson carded a three-under-par 69 on Friday to place second and lead Glendale Community College to a third-place finish in the 10-team Art Texiera Memorial Tournament at California Country Club in Whittier. Glendale had a 378, behind Long Beach City College (369) and College of the Desert (375).

Brennan Amirkhizi fired a 75 for the Vaqueros, who got a 76 from Jin Park, 77 from Danny Fernandez, 81 from Vincent Lam and an 83 from Aaron Fernandez.

Chadwick 3, Flintridge Prep 1: David Russell scored the lone goal for the Rebels on Friday in a Prep League match at the Glendale Sports Complex. Jesse Redding had an assist for Flintridge Prep, which finished its season 5-11-2, 2-6 in league.

Buckley 5, Glendale Adventist Academy 0: The visiting Cougars closed out their inaugural season Friday with a Liberty League loss. Glendale Adventist finished 2-13-1, 2-9-1 in league.
