Knights, Rebels bested by Spartans
GLENDALE — With the three schools separated by a couple of blocks, the La Cañada High, St. Francis and Flintridge Prep boys’ golf teams made the short trek to La Cañada Country Club for the second time this week to compete in a nonleague tri-match.
The end result Thursday proved to be similar to Tuesday’s matchup.
La Cañada got an even-par 34 from Jay Kim to shoot a 199 on Thursday. St. Francis finished second with a 201, followed by Flintridge Prep (215).
On Tuesday, La Cañada carded a 195, St. Francis had a 202 and Flintridge Prep carded a 212.
The Spartans improved to 4-0, while St. Francis is 2-2 and Flintridge Prep dropped to 0-4.
While the Spartans will look to win another Rio Hondo League championship under Coach Richard Tetu, the reigning All-Area Coach of the Year, expectations at St. Francis and Flintridge Prep vary.
“We have some kids who have not played and it’s about getting them confidence on the course and getting them to improve,” said Flintridge Prep Coach Bob Loughrie, who received a 36 from sophomore and reigning All-Area pick Jack Bouchard on Thursday after Bouchard carded a 33 to secure medalist honors Tuesday. “Every year, you have different objectives and this year, it’s to get better with things like chipping and putting.
“Those are the areas you need to work on to take strokes off.”
St. Francis Coach Jeff Durfee said the Golden Knights were able to reduce a few strokes Thursday, but added the repeated goal of the program is to shoot under 200.
“We always like to break 200,” Durfee said. “We also have a young team and we need some time to get experience.
“It’s good that we were able to improve on our score from Tuesday. Any time you do that, you have to be happy.”
La Cañada got a 38 from Derek Pateo, a member of the All-Area team, 41s from Noah Bernstein and Daniel Rhee and a 45 from Patrick Pateo.
The Golden Knights received a 36 from Richie Maloof, a reigning All-Area honoree, a 37 from Michael Finney, a 40 from Vince De Pinto and 43s from Michael Doll and Eric Suarez.
Justin Farshidi finished with a 42 for Flintridge Prep. The Rebels got a 43 from Will Guthrie, a 45 from Richard Lo and a 49 from Justin Chang.
