CV wins to open league
LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE — The Crescenta Valley High track and field team’s dual-meet Pacific League opener on Thursday afternoon was a numbers game — the Falcons had them and the visiting Muir Mustangs didn’t.
It was a landslide on the girls’ side, 115-10, while the boys’ team enjoyed a closer, but still rather one-sided, 81-43 margin to open league with a win, the first for both teams on the season.
“They just don’t have a lot depth right now,” Crescenta Valley Coach Mark Evans said of Muir. “We just have lot of people, we covered all the events, which is what we wanted to do and that’s how we ended up winning. They’re just in an early stage of the season and we’re farther along in our season than they are.”
While Muir struggled to fill lanes in girls’ events, the Falcons had no such problem, getting double wins from Cali King, Claudia Sepulveda and Tiernan Hebron.
“No matter what, we were going to try our best and we’re not going to let down for anyone,” said King, who took first in the 1,600 meters in 5 minutes 38.20 seconds and the 3,200 in 12:37.10, while also helping the Falcons’ 4x400 relay team, along with Kayleigh Carillo, Heather Robertson and Hebron, win in 4:23.50. “We’ve been working really hard over the last couple weeks and we’re going to have a good season.”
Hebron had the top times in the 200 (27.13) and the 400 (62.1), while Sepulveda turned in top marks in the 100 high hurdles (17.2) and the 300 high hurdles (49.62). Ali Johnson won the 800 in 2:48.60.
In field events, Selina Magid won the pole vault with a height of 7 feet, 6 inches, Shannon Green took the high jump with a leap of 4-6 and Laura White won the triple jump (30-9).
“I haven’t really looked at the times yet, my concern was getting the points and just competing and doing the best they could,” Evans said.
In boys’ competition, Josh Straschewski was a double-winner for Crescenta Valley in the 110 high hurdles (15.4) and the 300 high hurdles (43.7).
In distance events, Mike Duncan won the 1,600 in 4:36 and David Owens won the 3,200 in 10:58, while James Maturan won the 100 in 11.28.
Brennen Hickland had a mark of 10-6 in the pole vault, Levi Walker jumped 19-11 in the long jump and Bryan Yaung won the triple jump (40-6 1/2).
“It was a good win, and again, we had more depth than they had,” Evans said. “We competed well, we did a good job.”
Daitevyon McFadden, a former Crescenta Valley student, scored some points for Muir with a win in the 400 in 51.7 and a leg of the 4x400 relay, which the Mustangs won in 3:35.47.
