Vaqueros hit the track
GLENDALE — The following are previews of today’s contests involving area teams.
COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD
While no members of the Glendale Community College track and field team qualified in the field events for the Southern California Championships, plenty of runners will be on hand in their quest to advance to the California Community College Athletic Assn. Track and Field Championships.
It is on the track where the Vaqueros have excelled recently. Twelve Glendale college athletes are expected to compete in various events at the Southern California Championships, which will be held at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut. The field events will begin at 3 p.m. and the running events will start at 5.
Seven women and five men will participate from Glendale college.
On the women’s side, Catlin Kelly, Cecilia Nicolas and Diana Sanchez will participate in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Alyssa Selve, Laura Pluemer and Angela Martinez will be in the 1,500. Carissa Porter will compete in the 100 and 200 and Selve will run in the 800.
For the men, Neil Jones will be the busiest Vaquero, as he will take part in the 1,500 and 800. Jones will also work with Harold Tabora, Adrian Anderson and Trent Williams in the 4x400 relay.
The top six from each event except for the 100, 200, 400, 800, both hurdles events and relays will advance to the California Community College Athletic Assn. Track and Field Championships, which will be held May 20-21 at American River College in Sacramento. The top four finishes in the 100, 200, 400, 800, both hurdle events and relays plus the fastest fifth time from either the Northern California or Southern California championships will move on to state.
The finals in the women’s 10,000 were held May 6. Rosas finished third with a mark of 38.38.78 seconds to qualify. Ochoa took eighth (39.39) and will be an alternate.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Walnut at Glendale, 3 p.m.: The Nitros opened their CIF Southern Section Division II playoff run Tuesday with a 10-8 road victory against Arroyo Grande. Glendale, which finished third in the Pacific League, will get another stiff test from a Walnut squad that won the Hacienda League championship before besting Oxnard Pacifica, 14-4, in its first-round tilt.
The winner will face top-seeded Palm Desert or Claremont in a quarterfinal match Tuesday.
