Falcons upend Knights
BURBANK — With three starters missing because of travel ball commitments, the Crescenta Valley High boys’ basketball team turned to its remaining two regulars to lead the way.
The Falcons found a duo in Dylan Kilgour and Davis Dragovich that could shoot from the outside and provide a presence in the paint, respectively.
Kilgour finished with a game-high 22 points and Dragovich collected 17 points and seven rebounds to carry Crescenta Valley to a convincing 71-48 victory against St. Francis on Thursday night in a Burbank Summer League game at Burbank High.
Kilgour finished with four three-pointers, including three in the first half. Dragovich scored 12 points in the paint for the Falcons, who were without starters Christian Misi, Cole Currie and Rudy Avila.
“When we do have our full team, we have so many options,” said Kilgour, who had 14 first-half points to give the Falcons a 35-21 halftime advantage. “When the other teams defend Davis and I, there are other guys who can step up.
“I’m shooting the ball real well right now.”
Kilgour, a guard, did emphatically in the first half. He made three three-pointers in the first quarter. His third gave the Falcons a 19-7 lead with 58 seconds left in the opening quarter.
St. Francis got a three-pointer from Noah Willerford, who finished with a team-best 14 points, to cut Crescenta Valley’s lead to 28-17 with 4:10 left in the second quarter. However, Kilgour made an open three-pointer to make it 33-17 with 3:20 remaining in the opening half.
Crescenta Valley assistant Coach Sean Reid said Kilgour and Dragovich, a forward, provided an instant spark for the Falcons on Thursday.
“We’ve had those guys now for three years,” said Reid, who received eight points apiece from Tade Keshishyan and Kris Jabourian. “The last couple of weeks, we have not had our full team.
“Dylan’s been shooting the ball well all summer and Davis has also been leading us. We’ve been trying to feed Dylan as much as we can because he knows what he’s doing.”
St. Francis received 12 points from guard Emerson Castaneda and 10 from guard Zack Gardea. Castaneda and Gardea are reigning All-Mission League selections.
St. Francis co-Coach Ray O’Brien said Crescenta Valley’s hot start to the game played a factor in St. Francis’ struggles.
“They were hot and we missed some layups at the start and that was a killer,” O’Brien said. “A lot of their guys got hot and our transition defense was poor.
“CV’s a very good team and they were missing some people. When you play CV, you are here to learn because they have a lot of depth and experience.”
