Younker enjoys quite a night
The following are updates on area athletes at the collegiate level.
Rian Younker (St. Francis High, 2009) junior, defensive lineman, California Lutheran University football: The former All-Area and All-Mission League pick turned in an impressive performance for the Kingsmen on Saturday in their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.
Playing their first night home game in program history, the Kingsmen overcame a 24-point deficit to rally for a 28-24 victory against visiting University of Redlands.
Younker tied for the team lead in tackles with eight. He finished with three solo tackles and assisted on five for the Kingsmen (2-1).
The Kingsmen won with 16 seconds remaining in the game when quarterback Jake Laudenslayer scored on a one-yard run to complete a 10-play, 98-yard drive.
In three games, Younker is tied for fourth on the team with 13 tackles. He’s recorded five solo and eight assisted tackles, to go along with 1 1/2 sacks.
Cal Lutheran will next host Whittier in a conference game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Sam Orlandini (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2008) senior, setter, Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball: Orlandini, a former All-CIF member and two-time All-Area pick, and the Matadors came through with their biggest victory of the season Saturday against Big West Conference-leading Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.
CSUN turned to Orlandini, who came off the bench in her season debut, to register a team-high 26 assists in the Matadors’ 32-30, 25-21, 25-18 home victory. CSUN improved to 8-7 and 2-1 in conference, one match behind Fullerton. Fullerton entered the match having defeated CSUN three consecutive times. It was the Matadors’ first home win of the season, as they improved to 1-3.
The Matadors will next take part in a conference road match at 7 p.m. Friday at the University of the Pacific.
Kevin Orozco (Crescenta Valley High, 2008) senior, defender, University of San Francisco men’s soccer: The Dons entered Wednesday night’s West Coast Conference match against host Santa Clara riding a four-match unbeaten streak (3-0-1). In that stretch, San Francisco yielded three goals and scored eight.
Orozco’s heroics helped pave the way in San Francisco’s 1-0 conference overtime home victory against Gonzaga on Friday. In the opening moments of the second half, Orozco raced to the goalline and cleared aside a shot heading toward the empty net to keep the game scoreless.
San Francisco (4-4-1, 2-0 in conference) will next meet Saint Mary’s College in a conference match at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Camille Coffey (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2011) freshman, outside hitter, Fairfield University women’s volleyball: The reigning All-Area Girls’ Volleyball Player of the Year came through with a big effort to help Fairfield rally for a five-set win against rival Siena College on Sept. 25.
Coffey contributed 18 kills and 15 digs in Fairfield’s 22-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-8, 15-10 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference road victory.
In a conference-opening match against Canisius College on Sept. 17, Coffey finished with a match-high 18 kills and 16 digs to help Fairfield pick up a 25-14, 17-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-10 home win.
Entering Wednesday’s home match against Siena, Fairfield had won four in a row to improve to 8-8 and 5-1 in conference.
In 55 games played, Coffey has recorded 165 kills, second best on the team behind Brianna Dixion. Coffey has notched 166 digs.
