Nitros stopped by Apaches
SOUTHEAST GLENDALE — Though it hasn’t won since the first week of the season, the Glendale High football team continued to make strides by scoring a bundle of points and staying close with its opponents.
Over the last three weeks, the Nitros have regressed. They have struggled with tackling and turnovers have popped up at inopportune times.
“It comes down to the same thing and that’s that we don’t tackle,” Glendale Coach Alan Eberhart said after the Nitros suffered a 44-0 Pacific League home loss against Arcadia at Moyse Field on Friday night. “The other teams have good running backs and we don’t tackle them.
“That’s how things get out of control. You go from 7-0 to 14-0 and then it’s 21-0.”
That’s the way things have gone for the Nitros, who have yielded 163 points in their last three games against Burroughs, Muir and Arcadia.
Glendale lost its seventh game in a row to drop to 1-7, 0-5 in league with league contests left against Crescenta Valley and cross-town rival Hoover. Arcadia, ranked third in the latest CIF Southern Section Southeast Division poll, improved to 6-2, 4-2 after getting 150 yards rushing in 12 carries from running back Jake Medel.
The Apaches wasted little time getting started against a Glendale squad that competed without starting running back Alex Yoon (ankle injury).
On Arcadia’s first drive, wide receiver Joey Willm hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Myles Carr to make it 7-0 with 7:37 remaining in the first quarter. On its next possession, Carr scored on a 15-yard run to extend the lead to 14-0 with 1:59 left in the opening quarter.
Looking to narrow the deficit, Glendale’s ensuing drive ended with a fumble at the Arcadia 39-yard line. The Apaches, who won their third straight game, capitalized on the turnover early in the second quarter when tight end Robbie Haines caught a four-yard pass from Carr to built the lead to 21-0.
On Glendale’s ensuing drive, Arcadia linebacker Joe Wong intercepted a pass from quarterback Evan Norton at the Glendale 35-yard line and returned it to the 14. Medel then scored on nine-yard run to make it 28-0 with 9:55 left in the first half.
Norton was replaced by reserve quarterback Kevin Felix for the rest of the first half. The Apaches then sacked Felix in the end zone for a safety to extend the advantage to 30-0 with 6:38 left and then completed the first-half scoring two minutes later on a three-yard run by Nick Ryor.
Arcadia closed out the scoring on a 12-yard run by Rodney Arnett with 8:56 left in the fourth quarter.
Norton, who returned to play the entire second half, finished the game completing two of seven passes for 50 yards and a pair of interceptions. Glendale wide receiver Mike Davis caught both passes.
Glendale running back Christian Osorio rushed for 52 yards in 22 carries.
“Right now we are at a low point after playing a couple of good games,” Eberhart said.
