Falcons notch first ‘W’

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Crescenta Valley 2, Canyon 0: The Falcons notched their first win — and goals — of the season at home on Tuesday in a nonleague triumph.

Crescenta Valley (1-2) got a first-half goal from Katie Callister, while the combination of Karina Costilla and Lisa Kang collided with the Canyon goalie in the second half to knock in a 2-0 lead.

According to Coach Jorden Schulz, the team stepped up its play overall from the backline to the forwards after losing by a combined 5-0 score in its previous two outings.

New Community Jewish 8, Glendale Adventist Academy 1: Melissa Yeghiazarian scored on an assist from Sandra Candelario, as the Cougars fell to 1-2 both overall and in the Liberty League.

Rosemead 3, Hoover 0: The Tornadoes fell to 0-2 on the season with Tuesday’s nonleague home loss, in which they missed two penalty shots and had another score nullified.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Santa Monica 3, St. Francis 1: The Golden Knights got a goal from Matt Laterza on an assist from Eric Bocanegra in Tuesday’s nonleague home match. St. Francis fell to 0-2-2.

La Salle 6, Flintridge Prep 0: The Rebels allowed five goals in the second half of Tuesday’s nonleague home contest at the Glendale Sports Complex.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 79, Marshall Fundamental 34: Maddie Romero led the Tologs with 20 points in a pool-play contest of the Pasadena Poly Tournament on Tuesday.

Ivy Fitzgerald added 16 points for Sacred Heart (3-2).

Flintridge Prep 52, Ramona Convent 46 (OT): Mya Okamoto scored 21 points to lead the Rebels to a nonleague home win on Tuesday.

Kimberly Kim added 12 points for Prep (3-2), which received nine points and 11 rebounds from Kinsey Thompson.

El Monte 40, Hoover 39: Kariz Alberto scored 22 points for the Tornadoes in a South El Monte Tournament loss on Tuesday.

The Tornadoes led by one point with six seconds left, but committed a foul, leading to a game-tying free throw for South El Monte. To make matters worse, the foul was committed by a player who was wearing the wrong jersey number, prompting a technical foul and possession that cost Hoover the game.

Milken Community 56, Holy Family 25: Natalia Neris, Alex Mata and Gabby Diaz each scored six points for the Gaels (0-2) in a Viewpoint Tournament pool-play loss on Tuesday night.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Hart 81, Flintridge Prep 59: Chadd Cosse contributed 21 points Monday for the Rebels in a pool-play game of the Falcon Classic at Crescenta Valley High. Kory Hamane added eight points for Flintridge Prep.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

College of the Canyons 75, Glendale Community College 70: The Vaqueros (3-4) fell Sunday in the consolation final of the Antelope Valley Tournament. Glendale began the tournament Friday with an 88-87 loss to Antelope Valley and then earned a 95-79 win against Scottsdale (Ariz.) on Saturday. Against Scottsdale, the Vaqueros received 24 points and eight assists from Nick Rhodes, who earned all-tournament honors. Robert Henry had 23 points for the Vaqueros, who got 21 points from Mike Johnson and a game-high 11 rebounds from Soreen Derboghosian.
