Ebrahimian doing what he can for No. 16 Aztecs
The following are updates on area athletes at the collegiate level.
Narbeh Ebrahimian (Crescenta Valley High, 2009) junior guard, San Diego State University men’s basketball: After making the team as walk-on, Ebrahimian, a former All-Area first-team pick and standout at Glendale Community College, has received a bit of playing time for the Aztecs.
Ebrahimian, a previous All-Pacific League first-team honoree, has played in parts of four games for San Diego State (15-2, 1-0 in the Mountain West Conference). The Aztecs, then ranked 22nd in the country, began conference action Saturday with a 69-67 home win against 12th-ranked UNLV on a basket by Jamaal Franklin with three-tenths of seconds remaining.
The win helped the Aztecs soar in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls. San Diego State is ranked 16th in both polls, which were unveiled Monday.
While Ebrahimian did not play against UNLV, he contributed four points in San Diego State’s 83-52 nonconference home victory against San Diego Christian on Jan. 5. In a nonconference home contest against University of Redlands, Ebrahimian registered six rebounds in a 94-43 win Dec. 30.
Ebrahimian, who garnered All-Western State Conference first-team honors last season with the Vaqueros, is averaging 1.8 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.
San Diego State will next participate in a conference road contest against New Mexico at 7 p.m. PDT Wednesday before facing Air Force in a conference home game at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Anthony Stover (Renaissance Academy), sophomore center, UCLA men’s basketball: The former All-Area first-team pick who transferred to Windward from Renaissance after leading the Wildcats to the CIF-State Division V championship game in 2008, has picked up some valuable minutes with the Bruins.
On Sunday in a Pacific Athletic Conference-12 road game against cross-town rival USC, Stover recorded three blocks, three rebounds and two points in UCLA’s 66-47 victory. It was UCLA’s third win in a row.
In a conference home game against Arizona on Jan. 5, Stover finished with three points, three rebounds and two blocks in the Bruins’ 65-58 home win.
In 15 games, Stover is averaging 0.7 points and 1.2 rebounds per game and leads the Bruins with 19 blocks.
UCLA (10-7, 3-2 in conference) will meet host Oregon State at 7:30 p.m. Thursday before playing at Oregon at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Sulaiman Sekamwa (Glendale Community College, 2011) junior forward, Texas A&M at Kingsville men’s basketball: Sekamwa has provided the Javelinas with depth off the bench. In his most recent appearance, Sekamwa scored two points in the Javelinas’ 72-59 Lone Star Conference home victory against Abilene Christian on Jan. 7.
In 14 games, Sekamwa is averaging 2.6 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.
The Javelinas (8-7, 3-4 in conference) will next participate in a conference home game at 5:30 p.m. PDT Wednesday against Incarnate Word.
AJ Bernhardt (Glendale resident) sophomore, Cal State Northridge men’s hockey: The defender has shored up his overall game, tallying nine goals and 13 assists for 22 points in 17 games.
Bernhardt had one assist in Northridge’s 11-0 victory against Fresno State University on Jan. 7. In a contest against Chapman University on Dec. 10, he registered one goal and three assists in a 17-1 win.
Northridge is part of the American Collegiate Hockey Assn. Division 3 Pacific. It is 11-5 with one overtime loss for 23 points and 10th place in the 27-team Pacific.
Northridge will next face Colorado at 8:30 p.m. at the Valley Ice Center in Panorama City.
