Falcons fly by Nitros
SOUTHEAST GLENDALE — Dylan Kilgour didn’t mind handling two big responsibilities Monday night and he handled himself well in both roles.
The Crescenta Valley High boys’ basketball player contributed 15 points and held one of Glendale’s top players in check to help the visiting Falcons post a 62-45 Pacific League victory against the rival Nitros.
“We needed him tonight and he stepped up and picked up the slack,” said Crescenta Valley Coach Shawn Zargarian, whose team improved to 17-4, 6-2 in league and completed a two-game season series sweep against Glendale. “I told our assistants he played denial defense on [Glendale forward Sevan Pogosyan], and then he hit open shots and found the open guys.”
Glendale (8-12, 3-5) stayed close with Crescenta Valley until midway through the second quarter, trailing, 20-14, with 4:01 left. The Falcons, ranked sixth in the latest CIF Southern Section Division I-A poll, then used a 12-5 run to take a 32-19 halftime lead.
Kilgour, a senior guard, scored on a layup as the half expired.
“I got into a little groove and I got some shots,” Kilgour said. “The last time we played Glendale, [Pogosyan] had a good game [with a game-high 23 points] and I had to stick on him.”
The Nitros, who fell to 1-3 in their last four contests, got 14 points from Pogosyan.
Unfortunately for the Nitros, they didn’t have anyone else to equal or surpass Pogosyan’s point production.
“We had a terrible last three or four minutes in the second half and we had no inside or outside game,” Glendale Coach Steve Snodgress said. “We shot 0-12 from beyond the three-point arc and that’s not going to win you too many games.
“We need to find our shooting touch. Our offensive game might show up on a milk carton.”
Kilgour made a buzzer-beating jump shot to end the third quarter that gave the Falcons a 46-33 advantage.
Zargarian said the Falcons overcame a slow start to the game, something he said needs to be addressed.
“It’s happened the last two games and we’ve been fortunate to win,” said Zargarian, who got 15 and 12 points, respectively, from senior center Christian Misi and senior forward Davis Dragovich. “We better stop doing it, or it will cost us a game.”
Glendale got six points apiece from senior center David Yetenikyan and junior guard Vahe Aristakessian.
