Vaquero bats too much for Citrus

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale Community College 14, Citrus 2: Two days after a shutout loss to Citrus, the Vaqueros offense blew up for a Western State Conference South Division victory on the road Thursday.

GCC (16-6, 6-2 in the division) was led by sophomore Cory Popham on the mound. Popham struck out seven and walked two in seven innings to pick up the win. Glendale’s Chris Stroh and Cameron Gardner had triples, while Julian Jarrad had a pair of doubles and Trevor Trinidad and Edgar Montes also had doubles.

On Wednesday, the visiting Vaqueros picked up a 7-1 division victory against L.A. Mission College at El Cariso Park. Stroh went three for five with a double and Montes homered to back starter Alonzo Gonzalez (seven innings pitched, no earned runs). Matt McCalllister also had a two-run double for the Vaqueros.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Glendale Community College 2, Citrus College 0 (8 innings): Jena Kaser hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to lead the Vaqueros to a Western State Conference Blue Division victory Thursday. Jennifer Nguyen led off with a walk before Kaser homered to improve the Vaqueros to 17-7, 4-1 in the division. Glendale starting pitcher Brandy Morin (12-6) went the distance, striking out four and yielding four hits.

MEN’S TENNIS

Ventura College 7, Glendale Community College 2: Trevor Campbell earned both of the Vaqueros’ wins at home Thursday with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-0 victory in singles and an 8-2 win in doubles with partner Grayson Frazier. Glendale fell to 5-8, 2-5 in the Western State Conference.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Ventura College 7, Glendale Community College 2: The visiting Vaqueros received singles wins from Katherine Akmakji (6-4, 6-4) and Zar Chavdarian (7-5, 6-2) on Thursday in a Western State Conference match. Glendale improved to 5-6, 4-3 in the division.

SOFTBALL

Hoover 17, Muir 0 (five innings): The Tornadoes won their Pacific League opener on Thursday at home. Lilly Rivera had a home run and four runs batted in, while Kaitlyn Williams added four RBI and a double and a triple. Jessica Rivera had three stolen bases.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Viewpoint 3, Flintridge Prep 1: The Rebels (7-8, 1-1) fell in a nonleague match to visiting Viewpoint 23-25, 25-16, 25-17, 27-25, on Thursday.

Junior middle blocker Kareem Ismail led Prep with 13 kills and eight blocks and Kory Hamane chipped in 11 kills in limited action.

According to Prep Coach Sean Beattie, Hamane rolled his ankle in the third game and missed the rest of the contest. Beattie said Hamane “was fine,” but it wasn’t clear if Hamane would be available for today’s Prep League home match against Rio Hondo Prep.

Harvard-Westlake 3, St. Francis 0: Chris Thompson had 34 assists Thursday for the visiting Golden Knights, who suffered a 27-25, 25-21, 26-24 Mission League defeat. Michael Bacall finished with 12 kills, while Charles McCarthy and Wesley Coffey added 10 apiece for St. Francis (6-4, 3-4 in league).

BOYS’ GOLF

Pasadena Poly 199, Flintridge Prep 218, Webb 226: Jack Bouchard shot a one-over-par 36 on Thursday in a Prep League tri-match at Altadena Golf Course.

La Canada 173, Crescenta Valley 204: The Falcons lost Thursday’s nonleague match at the par-34 La Canada Country Club. Paul Park carded a 39 for Crescenta Valley.
