Cruz sets school record

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Vaqueros in Riverside City College Open: Glendale college’s Melissa Cruz set a school record with a mark of 10 feet in the pole vault in Friday’s competition. The Vaqueros also received first-place finishes from Justice Shank in the high jump (5-1 3/4), Angela Martinez in the 1,500-meter race (4 minutes 52.46 seconds) and Lilia Asserian in the 800 (2:16.87).

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale college in Riverside City College Open: Vladimir Diaz won the two-mile race in 9 minutes 46 seconds on Friday. Also picking up first-place efforts for the Vaqueros were Mario Castillo in the 1,500 (4:06.21) and Jason Ahn in the javelin (177 feet).

MEN’S TENNIS

Amherst College 6, Glendale Community College 3: The Vaqueros fell Friday in a nonconference home match against Amherst, which captured the NCAA Division III Championship last season. Glendale (5-9) received a 6-3, 6-2 singles win from Trevor Campbell. Campbell and Grayson Frazier teamed up for an 8-3 doubles win. The Vaqueros also got a 9-8 (12-10) doubles victory from Rick Ivynian and Eric Khanlarian.

BASEBALL

Hoover 12, Muir 5: Hoover (3-4-1) received three hits from Kevin Mendoza on Friday in a Pacific League opener on the road.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Chaminade 12, Glendale 9: Elena Pierce and Jenna Nance finished with four and three goals, respectively, for the host Nitros in a Prep League match. Glendale dropped to 6-6, 1-3 in league.

SOFTBALL

Pasadena Poly 15, Flintridge Prep 1 (five innings): The Rebels suffered a Prep League road defeat Friday and dropped to 0-10, 0-3 in league. Chelsea Johnson drove in Flintridge Prep’s run in the first inning for the Rebels.

Crescenta Valley 19, Pasadena 2 (five innings): Hannah Cookson hit a home run Thursday to lead the visiting Falcons in a Pacific League opener. Crescenta Valley (6-1) received one triple apiece from Hailey Cookson, Whitney Craig and Tiffany Briscoe.
