Popham propels GCC

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale Community College 14, West L.A. 0: Glendale college ran roughshod over West L.A. on the road in Tuesday’s Western State Conference South Division game.

GCC (19-8, 10-4 in conference) got a gem from starter Cory Popham, who threw a one-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts and no walks.

Offensively, Ruben Padilla had a grand slam, while Robert DeSantiago had two hits and a RBI.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Glendale Community College 9-3, Bakersfield College 0-2: Jennifer Nguyen hit a grand slam and Jena Kazer hit a solo home run to lead the visiting Vaqueros to a victory in the first game of a Western State Conference Blue Division doubleheader. Pitcher Brandy Morin allowed one hit and struck out eight in a game called after six innings because of the mercy rule.

In the second game, Kazer had a two-run double in the fourth inning to give the Vaqueros (23-11, 8-4 in the division) a 3-0 lead. Morin (16-8) struck out five in the second contest.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Chadwick 17, Flintridge Prep 1: Teddy Willard and Michael Cassutt teamed up for a 6-3 doubles victory for host Flintridge Prep on Tuesday in a Prep League opener at Scholl Canyon Tennis Center. Flintridge Prep dropped to 3-7.

BASEBALL

Crescenta Valley 16, Redondo Union 2: The Falcons exploded for seven runs in the first inning of their Babe Herman Tournament pool play game on Monday at Stengel Field.

Michael Russo keyed the outburst with a grand slam.

Cole Currie pitched four innings of one-run ball to notch the victory.
