Vaqueros duo advances to semis

The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene.

GCC TANDEM MAKES IT

TO OJAI SEMIFINALS

Whether at Glendale High or Glendale Community College, Samantha Sismundo and Sevana Zargarian are no strangers to tournament success.

The Vaqueros duo made a run all the way to the 112th annual Ojai Valley Tournament Women’s Community College Doubles tournament semifinals Saturday.

Zargarian and Sismundo came up short against top-seeded Sophie Angner and Talia Hudson of Santa Barbara, 6-3, 6-4. Sismundo and Zargarian, a former All-Area Girls’ Tennis Doubles Team of the Year, began their semifinal run with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over a Fresno City tandem before a 6-3, 6-1 sweep of a Cerritos duo in the round of 32. In the round of 16, the Vaqueros bested El Camino’s Lindsay Guardado and Chun Young Shin, 6-4, 4-6, 15-13. Another three-set marathon awaited in the quarters when the GCC tandem beat Palomar’s Mardee Littrell and Hillary Ramage, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Elsewhere in the bracket, Glendale’s Sofia Tavitian and Phoebe Minette lost in the opening round to Grossmont’s Nathaly Moungvong and Alexis Ronney, 1-6, 6-4, 10-6.

Tavitian advanced into the round of 32 in Women’s Community College Singles, besting American River’s Katie Marshall, 6-0, 6-0, in the round of 128 before beating San Diego Mesa’s Gabi Fortunato, 6-1, 3-6, 10-8. She ultimately fell to Daria Kulbikova of Sierra, 6-3, 6-1. Zargarian won against Veronica Vankirk of Victor Valley, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 64 before losing to Mardee Littrell of Palomar, 7-6, 6-3. Sismundo beat Sierra’s Cortnei Chance, 6-1, 6-3, in the round of 128, but lost to Saddleback’s Jeanette Losaria, 7-5, 6-4, in the following round.

In Men’s Community College Singles, Trevor Campbell got a bye into the round of 64, and then defeated San Diego Mesa’s Gleb Bilyalov, 5-7, 6-3, 10-6, before losing to 11th-seeded Anton Saranchukov of Sierra, 6-1, 6-1. Grayson Frazier lost in the opening round, 6-4, 6-1, to Farren Cassard of De Anza.

In community college doubles, the seventh-seeded Campbell and Frazier were upset in the first round by the Saddleback tandem of Chris Bloom and Donnie Howren, 6-3, 6-3. GCC’s Rick Ivynian and Eric Khanlarian lost in the opening round to a Foothill duo, 6-4, 6-2.

Glendale High product Robert Yim lost in the round of 16 in the Men’s Singles Open Draw after a 6-2, 6-0 opening-round win against Marcin Kosakowski. Yim lost to fourth-seeded Lester Cook, 7-6, 6-4.

The girls’ 16 singles draw saw Glendale’s Andrea Kevakian, the fourth seed, win in the round of 32, 6-2, 6-0, before falling in the round of 16 to ninth-seeded Jacqueline Pelletier.

In boys’ 14 singles, Glendale’s Matthew Tsolakyan advanced to the round of 32, as did Cassie McKenzie of Glendale in the girls’ 14 singles.

In girls’ 18 singles, Emily Borkowski of Crescenta Valley High lost in the first round to sixth-seeded Mazy Watrous, 6-4, 6-1. Glendale’s Alex Kevakian lost in the first round of the boys’ 16 singles.

REBELS RECEIVE

CIF RANKING

According to the latest CIF Southern Section Division V poll unveiled Monday, the Flintridge Prep boys’ volleyball team is ranked eighth. The Rebels, who compete in the Prep League, have held that spot for three weeks in a row.

Salesian holds the top spot. Four other teams from the Prep League are ranked, including Chadwick (second), Pasadena Poly (fourth), Webb (seventh) and Rio Hondo Prep (10th).
