GCC baseball hopes for repeat success

For the second year in a row, the Glendale Community College baseball team will look to advance out of the California Community College Athletic Assn.’s Southern California Super Regional tournament to the state championship.

The quest through the double-elimination tournament begins today when the Vaqueros (27-10) take on fourth-seeded Mt. San Antonio College (30-8) in their tournament opener at Orange Coast Community College at 3 p.m.

Win or lose, Glendale will play at the same location Saturday against top-seeded Orange Coast Community College (33-4-1) or eighth-seeded Cypress College (24-14), which face each other Friday at 11 a.m.

Friday’s winners and losers will square off with one another Saturday at a time to be determined.

Vaqueros take on Super Regional host

After sweeping through the Southern California Regional, the Glendale Community College softball team is looking for more success in the Super Regionals.

The Vaqueros (29-13) begin Super Regional play today against tournament-host and second-seeded Cypress College (38-4) at 2 p.m.

Third-seeded Mt. San Antonio and sixth-seeded Bakersfield College play at 4 p.m. Friday with the day’s losers and winners squaring off in the double-elimination tournament Saturday at a time to be determined.

Duo looks to end on high note

Sevana Zargarian and Samantha Sismundo of the Glendale Community College women’s tennis team realize the State Championship is perhaps the last tournament they’ll compete in together.

The former Glendale High doubles tennis team takes to state in doubles with play beginning today at 4 p.m. at the Balboa Tennis Club in San Diego. Tournament doubles play carries into Saturday at 4 p.m.

Fan appreciation night set

The Crescenta Valley High baseball team will hold its fan appreciation night during its Pacific League game against rival Arcadia. The contest will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at Stengel Field.

A raffle, silent auction, bake sale, face painting, Mickey Mantle autographed picture, Dodgers tickets and other prizes will be featured. Dinner will be served by Los Gringos.

Glendale Tornado signups

A new Pop Warner football program based in Glendale and serving surrounding areas will be conducting signups for the 2012 season from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the football field at Hoover High School, 651 Glenwood Road, Glendale. The field is accessed through the rear entrance of the school on Olmstead Avenue.

Age-group tackle and flag football are offered, as well as a cheerleading/dance squad. Players ages 5-15 are eligible. Practices begin Aug. 1 for the season, which kicks off Aug. 26.

The registration cost, which includes equipment and game day uniform rental and practice uniform, is $280 for tackle football, flag football is $165 and cheerleading is $170, which does not include uniform cost. Discounted rates are available if all fees are paid in full by May 1.

The Glendale Tornados are also seeking coaches and athletic directors for the 2012 season.

Glendale Bears holding signups

The Glendale Bears Junior All-American football program is holding registration for flag and tackle football and cheerleading for the 2012 season from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 20 and June 24 at Glendale High School in the parking lot on the corner of Broadway and Verdugo Avenue.

The registration cost for flag football (ages 6-8) is $165 and the cost for tackle (8-14) is $280 and the fees include game day and practice uniforms and equipment rental. The cost for cheerleading (ages 6-14) is $170, which does not include a uniform. Payment plans are available.

The season begins July 16 and home games are played at Moyse Field.

Soccer club looking for players

Globetrotters to hold clinic

The Harlem Globetrotters will partner with 24 Hour Fitness to host a skills clinic for ages 6-14 at 24 Hour Fitness, 450 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale.

The event will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. June 27-28. Each clinic will be conducted by current Globetrotter players.

CV Athletic Hall of Fame

The fourth annual Crescenta Valley High School Athletic Hall of Fame banquet and ceremony will take place May 26 at the Angeles National Golf Club, 9401 Foothill Blvd., Sunland. A reception will begin at 5 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:45 and the ceremony at 8.

Those set to be inducted include Darrin Beer, Dan Berry, Paul Steinbacher, Dale Sweeney, Scott Harper, Kerry Zwart, Lauren Hawthorne, Nada Kawar and the 1986 CIF champion softball team.

Beer was an All-CIF baseball player for the Falcons in 1985, as well as Pacific Leaguer MVP. He went on to play at USC, where he holds Trojan records for appearances and games started and has been an assistant baseball coach at Crescenta Valley since 1991.

Berry will be honored posthumously and is credited with starting the CV softball program in 1983. Berry, who died in November at 65, guided the Falcons to the CIF title in 1986, a 5-4 victory over Woodbridge. He piloted the Falcons to 20 Pacific League titles.

Harper was the CIF Player of the Year for the Falcons in 1976 after scoring 128 goals for the boys’ water polo team.

Hawthorne is considered one of the best female tennis players to compete at Crescenta Valley and holds the school record for most victories. She was a member of four straight Pacific League championship teams from 2000-03. She was a multiple league champion in singles and doubles and was All-CIF from 2001-03.

Kawar was a top athlete in women’s basketball and track and field for the Falcons, earning a scholarship to UCLA where she scored points in the shot put and discus for the Bruins in the 1997 and 1998 NCAA meets and was also an Academic All-American. She represented the country of Jordan in the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics.

Steinbacher was a prolific football player for the Falcons’ CIF Championship team in 1973 and helped anchor the defense for Coach Gordy Warnock, a 2010 CV Hall of Fame inductee. He earned all-league and All-CIF honors in 1973.

Sweeney was an All-League and All-CIF water polo player for the Falcons in 1976 and helped the team advance to the CIF finals.

Kerry Zwart-Bell was one of the top female athletes to compete at Crescenta Valley. She won the state championship for in the shot put in 1978, as well as the CIF and Master’s titles that year and was the CIF and Master’s champion in the long jump in 1979. She was an All-American in the Pentathlon at USC and still holds the school record in that event.

The 1986 CIF title for the softball team is the only one for that sport in school history.

Falcon Baseball Summer Camp

The third annual Falcon Summer Baseball Camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon June 25-28 at Montrose Park, 3529 Clifton Place, Montrose.

The event is spearheaded by Crescenta Valley baseball Coach Phil Torres and will focus on fundamentals and games. The cost is $150 per person.

The Crescenta Valley Crush 12-and-under travel baseball team has an open position. The team practices in La Crescenta, employs a regular strength and agility program and competes in regional tournaments.

Sports training camp all set

The William Middlebrooks Sports Training Program, presented By The Dunking Frogs Foundation and Ribet Academy, is conducting a camp designed to assist student-athletes in different sports and overall athletic training. The program also specializes in college prep clinics for parents, individual evaluations and group training.
