Angelenos shoot down Stars, 13-1

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — Throughout most of the season, the Glendale Angelenos have displayed power and speed throughout the top of the lineup.

They’ve also shown themselves to be skilled in the middle and bottom of the order. Matthew Tellesco and Pedro Aldape proved it Friday night.

Tellesco and Aldape combined for seven hits to lead the host Angelenos to a 13-1 independent summer collegiate victory against the Montebello Stars at Stengel Field.

Aldape collected four hits and has six hits in Glendale’s last two games. Tellesco finished with three hits and has nine hits in his last 11 at-bats.

“We have a good lineup that we always try to roll it over,” said Aldape, who batted eighth and registered his first four-hit game this season. “I’ve started to figure things out and I’ve begun to wait for my pitches to hit.”

Tellesco, who went six for six in Thursday’s 17-2 home win against the South Coast Braves, said he’s made some adjustments with his swing while spending extra time in the batting cage.

“I think that’s where it all starts,” said Tellesco, who batted fifth. “It’s helped me develop a rhythm at the plate and I just want to keep it going.”

Tellesco and Aldape had three singles apiece. The Angelenos (28-7) finished with 17 hits.

Glendale Manager Tony Riviera said Tellesco and Aldape are aware of their roles.

“Matt is what we call the ultimate baseball rat,” Riviera said. “You expect him to show up and leave here filthy and he’s one of the hardest-working players I’ve coached in 30 years.

“Pedro is one of our top clutch hitters. He can come off the bench and get a pinch hit or have a good game when starting.”

The Angelenos began the scoring in the third. With two outs and runners on first and second, Tellesco lined a single to center. Chris Stroh dashed home from second, sliding under the attempted tag by Montebello catcher Joey Saito.

Glendale starting pitcher Angel Rodriguez struck out David Peters on a 2-2 pitch to escape a bases-loaded jam in the fourth. Rodriguez, a right-hander, allowed one hit and struck out five and walked five before being replaced by Sean Adler to begin the fifth.

Adler retired nine of the 10 batters he faced before yielding to Sam Frakes, who appeared in the eighth and ninth. Montebello finished with two hits.

Sako Chapjian was hit by a pitch on an 0-2 count with the bases loaded to make it 2-0 in the fourth. Edgar Montes followed with a two-run single to left to extend the lead to 4-0.

Ruben Padilla of Glendale hit a two-run home run to left to make it 6-0 in the fifth.

Chapjian hit a two-run home run to left-center field to extend the lead to 8-0 in the sixth.

Aldape blooped a run-scoring single to right for his fourth hit of the game to make it 9-0. A throwing error by the catcher brought home Tellesco to raise the advantage to 10-0. Scott Hong then hit a two-run double to give the Angelenos a 12-0 lead. Hong then scored on a wild pitch to complete the seven-run inning.

The Angelenos sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth.

Montebello (8-10-2) avoided the shutout when Diego Rubio drove in a run with a groundout to second in the ninth.

Glendale, a second-year program, will face the visiting Southern California Halos at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The Angelenos will take on Montebello at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Stengel.
