SPORTS ROUNDUP: Rebels start tourney with ‘amazing’ win
BOYS’ WATER POLO
Flintridge Prep in Los Altos Tournament: The Rebels never led until the fourth quarter when they opened the Los Altos Tournament with a 10-9 win over J Serra on a sudden-death overtime goal from Diego Delgado, who had a team-high five goals in the match, at Schurr High.
Flintridge Prep had to overcome a three-goal deficit after the first period to grab the win. Prep kept chipping away at the lead, bringing it to two, 7-5, after three quarters before it went on a three-goal run to start the fourth, gave up a goal and then answered right back with another to tie at 9 on a long-distance shot with a minute left in regulation.
Delgado sealed the Prep victory on a back-handed score in overtime.
“It was just an absolutely amazing game,” Flintridge Prep Coach Dan Hare said. “I don’t think anybody could have believed it, it was just a stunning development.”
Ethan Vandeventer finished with two goals and two assists for the Rebels, who earned a second-round game with Prep League foe Chadwick, which Hare said Prep hadn’t defeated in five years, later Friday.
