Brooke Elby, North Carolina Tarheels in NCAA Elite Eight

The following are update on area athletes playing collegiate sports.

Brooke Elby (Flintridge Prep, 2011) North Carolina women’s soccer, sophomore: Elby played 30 minutes off the bench in the 14th-ranked Tarheels’ 1-1 (4-2) victory over ninth-ranked Baylor in the third round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Tournament on Sunday at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill.

North Carolina got a match-tying goal from junior midfielder Crystal Dunn in the 82nd minute before prevailing on penalty kicks to end the Bears’ 21-match unbeaten streak and advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2009.

Elby and the Tarheels (12-5-3) will next play at third-ranked BYU (20-1-2) Friday at South Stadium in Provo, Utah.

On the season, Elby has appeared in 19 games, starting five, and has logged 775 minutes on the field. The midfielder has one goal scored and three assists on the year for a total of five points.

Alyssa Conti (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2011) Johns Hopkins soccer, sophomore: The Blue Jays’ NCAA Division III Tournament run ended in the Elite Eight on Sunday night with a 3-0 loss to top-seeded Messiah.

Conti, a midfielder, came off the bench to notch the only shot on goal of the match for Johns Hopkins, which finished the season 18-5-1.

On the year, Conti started in 11 of 17 games played and logged two assists, while taking two shots on goal.

Camille Coffey (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2011) sophomore, Fairfield University women’s volleyball: Coffey notched six kills, an ace and 20 digs in the top-seeded Stags’ 20-25, 25-27, 25-21, 25-20, 15-11 win over second-seeded Sienna College in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship game at home on Sunday.

It is the sixth MAAC title in program history and the first for Fairfield since 2001.

On the season, Coffey, an outside hitter, has appeared in 30 matches, including 24 starts, and recorded totals of 199 kills, 29 assists, 13 aces and 301 digs.

Coffey and the Stags (22-8) now await their NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship fate as the NCAA Selection Show will take place on Nov. 25 at 4pm live on ESPNU.

Jenna Orlandini (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2009) University of Washington women’s volleyball, junior: Orlandini led the Huskies with 14 digs in a 25-15, 25-13, 25-22 home win over Oregon State at Alaska Airlines Arena on Saturday.

The win set up an interesting end to the regular season that saw the Huskies play Arizona State at home Wednesday night before traveling to Washington State for the season finale on Friday.

Wins in their final two games could allow Washington (22-5) to finish as high as second in the Pacific-12 Conference, as the Huskies look to earn a top-16 seed and first- and second-round home games in the NCAA Division I tournament.

Orlandini, a libero/defensive specialist. has enjoyed a solid season in which she’s totaled a team-high 398 digs.

Rian Younker (St. Francis High, 2009) senior, California Lutheran football: Younker recovered a fumble and returned it for 39 yards on Saturday in what was one of few highlights Kingsmen fans had to cheer about in Cal Lutheran’s 41-21 loss to North Central in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

The defensive end finished with two tackles, including one for a loss.

Younker’s teammate and fellow Golden Knight alum Chris Cabrera, a junior linebacker, also recovered a fumble and recorded three tackles for the Kingsmen, who finished the year 8-2.
