Glendale boys’ soccer clinches playoff berth

BOYS’ SOCCER

Glendale 5, Hoover 0: Needing a victory and some help to qualify for the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs, the Nitros did their part as they received two goals from Albert Chamagua on Thursday in a Pacific League road match at Toll Middle School.

The victory, coupled with Crescenta Valley’s victory against Arcadia and Pasadena’s win over Muir, gave the Nitros the fourth and final automatic playoff berth from the league. Glendale improved to 6-7-1 in league for 19 points, one more than Arcadia.

“We had a goal coming into the season and that was to make the playoffs,” said Glendale first-year Coach Artur Aghasyan, who got one goal apiece from Pablo Buenrostro, Berj Ghazarian and Andre Andreasian. “It’s not the end and we want to keep doing well, but we still have a lot of work to do.”

Hoover finished 1-10-3 in league for six points and last place in the eight-team league.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Flintridge Prep 63, Pasadena Poly 51: Robert Cartwright and Kareem Ismail each registered 11 points Thursday to lead the host Rebels in a Prep League game.

Jedrick Eugenio added 10 points for Flintridge Prep (19-5, 8-0 in league).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Glendale 49, Hoover 35: The Nitros (15-10, 8-6), who will enter next week’s playoffs as the fourth-place team out of the Pacific League, took down their rivals on Thursday night.

Kristineh Zadourian had 18 points, six rebounds and five assists to lead Glendale, while Tara Abdul-Ahad added seven points and two steals and Ellin Avanessian had six points and three rebounds.

Hoover finished the season with a 1-13 record in league.

Arcadia 65, Crescenta Valley 29: Alisa Shinn finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks for the host Falcons in a Pacific League contest. Crescenta Valley finished its season at 9-18, 4-10 in league.

Pasadena Poly 60, Flintridge Prep 39: Tala Ismail and Lacy Coan each scored nine points Thursday for the host Rebels in a Prep League game. Flintridge Prep dropped to 16-7, 9-3 in league.

Chaminade 73, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 26: Casey Johnson finished with 10 points Thursday for the visiting Tologs in a Mission League game. Flintridge Sacred Heart dropped to 9-17, 0-10 in league.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Burbank 16, Hoover 0: The Tornadoes concluded their season Thursday with a loss in a consolation match of the Pacific League Tournament. Hoover finished 0-7 in league.

Pasadena Poly 22, Flintridge Prep 1: Erin Phillips scored the lone goal for the host Rebels on Wednesday in a Prep League match.

MEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College 8, Fullerton College 1: The host Vaqueros (2-1) won five of their six singles sets Thursday in a nonconference match.

Glendale received singles wins from Gaspar Macalutas (6-2, 6-3), Dat Le (6-0, 6-2), Santiago Segovia (6-4, 6-0), Philip Lam (6-3, 6-1) and Oscar Lam (6-2, 6-1). In doubles action, Andrew You and Macalutas earned an 8-2 win for the Vaqueros, who got an 8-4 victory from Le and Philip Lam and an 8-3 win from Frank Chicco and Stephen Joharry.
