Glendale Vaquero quartet sets school record

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Vaqueros in Western State Conference Relays: Glendale Community College received a school-record time of 12 minutes 8.71 seconds for first place in the 4,000-meter distance relay from the quartet of Charlene Quintanilla, Nafasi Mataei, Lilia Asserian and Grace Zamudio on Friday at West L.A. College. They eclipsed the previous best mark of 12:10.39, which was accomplished in 2010.

Also picking up first-place finishes for the Vaqueros were Lizzete Gonzalez, Asserian, Quintanilla and Zamudio in 9:32.49 in the 4x800 and Ana Tonga in the long jump (15 feet 10 1/2 inches).

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Vaqueros in Western State Conference Relays: Glendale Community College got a first-place finish from Edwardo Vasquez, Daniel Munoz, Mario Castillo and Issac Diosdado in 10 minutes 21 seconds in the distance relay Friday at West L.A. College.

Also earning first-place efforts for the Vaqueros were Ashton Malone, Vasquez, Diosdado and Castillo in the 4x800 (8:03.22), Jason Ahn in the javelin (170 feet 3 inches), Nicholas La Croix in the shot put (43-1/2) and Quaid Vuncannon in the discus (135-3).

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale Community College 6, College of the Canyons 4 (10 innings): The Vaqueros picked up a Western State Conference South Division road victory Thursday to improve to 6-3, 3-0 in the division.

Andre Angel-Bello had a two-run bases-loaded single in the 10th inning. Chris Whitmer had a home run for the Vaqueros. Relief pitcher Tyler Delzell picked up the victory.

On Tuesday, Glendale registered a 10-2 division road win. Starting pitcher Angel Rodriguez went seven innings and allowing one run to earn the win. Julian Jarrad, Edgar Montes, Austin Walker and Jay Sheeley recorded two hits apiece for the Vaqueros.

MEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College 6, L.A. Pierce College 3: The host Vaqueros won their Western State Conference opener Thursday, winning five singles sets. Picking up singles victories for the Vaqueros (4-2) were Gaspar Macalutas (6-1, 6-1), Dat Le (6-4, 6-2), Son Tran (6-2, 6-0), Phillip Lam (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) and Santiago Segovia (6-1, 6-3). Le and Lam teamed up for a 9-7 doubles win.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Santa Monica City College 6, Glendale Community College 3: The visiting Vaqueros fell Thursday in their Western State Conference opener. Glendale (5-3) received a singles victory from Amanda Dring (2-6, 6-3, 2-1, retired). In doubles, the Vaqueros got an 8-2 win from Sofia Tavitian and Allie Amour and an 8-3 victory from Dring and Sydney Farzadkish.
