For a pair of singles players and a doubles tandem on the Glendale Community College women’s team, it was about survival during the first day of the Western State Conference Tournament.

That’s precisely what singles athletes Sofia Tavitian and Alexandra Amor and the tandem of Sydney Farzadkish and Ashley Sumudio managed to do Friday during the early rounds of the event Friday at El Camino Real Park in Ventura.

“They were all tested pretty much,” Glendale assistant Coach Deo Sy said. “It good for them that they were to help them keep going.”

Amor and Tavitian will take part in quarterfinal match at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Ventura College. Farzadkish and Sumudio will compete at 4 p.m. in a backdraw match, an eight-draw tournament that determines the ninth and 10 spots.

Each singles player received a first-round bye before taking to the courts for their second-round matches Friday.

The fourth-seeded Sumudio posted a 6-1, 6-2 round of 32 win against unseeded Nayda Bravo of Santa Barbara City College. She then recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory against eighth-seeded Leah Stewart of Bakersfield in a round of 16 contest.

“Sofia had a lot of long rallies in her first match,” Sy said. “She had to be steady and patient, not only in the first match but also in the second one.”

Amor, the seventh seed, started off with a 6-1, 6-2 win against unseeded Vanessa Imani of Santa Barbara. Amor then picked up a 6-4, 6-1 victory against 11th-seeded Victoria Mamatova of Santa Monica City College.

“She played well throughout and got the critical points when she needed them,” Sy said.

In doubles, Farzadkish, a Crescenta Valley High graduate, and Sumudio were paired together for the first time this season. Sumudio had worked with Nerrissa Fnu, but Fnu suffered an injury during a singles match and had to withdraw.

The duo notched a 6-2, 6-1 win against Imani and MacKenzie Eccles.

“They played well together, and Sydney brought her game up,” Sy said. “I was impressed with the way they came through.”

Sumudio posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Kaleigh Rodriguez of Ventura before falling, 6-4, 6-2, to Carmel Peterson of Santa Monica. Glendale’s Stephanie Isidro fell, 6-0, 6-0, to Katy Scheck of Ventura. Nerrissa suffered an ankle injury while competing against Bakersfield’s Jackie Griffin and was forced to default.

Farzadkish suffered a 6-1, 6-1 defeat against Sonia Landeros of Ventura.

In doubles, Sumudio and Farzadkish fell to Peterson and Mamatova, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, in a round of 16 match. Tavitian and Amor recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win in their round-of-16 match against Karla Hernandez and Elin Hedberg. The duo then were defeated, 0-6, 6-3, 7-6(7-3), by Stewart and Jackie Griffin.
