John Huh revels following first appearance at Masters Tournament
John Huh arrived at his Texas home Monday quite satisfied following his most recent accomplishment and with his young career on the upswing.
Huh, a 2008 Crescenta Valley High graduate, participated in The Masters Tournament last week. He finished tied for 11th in the prestigious event, earning him an invitation to the 2014 rendition at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
“My ultimate goal was to go out there and play some good golf,” said Huh, last year’s PGA Rookie of the Year who finished the four-round event with a two-under-par 286. “It’s neat for me that I get to come back and I feel like I deserve it.
“The experience was great. I achieved my goal. I can take a lot of positive stuff from playing in The Masters.”
The top 12 finishers receive automatic berths into the following year’s event. Huh, who made the cut by one stroke following Friday’s competition, tied with Tim Clark and netted $192,000.
Huh, 22, enjoyed a spectacular final round Sunday on one of the sport’s biggest stages. Huh, who helped Crescenta Valley win Pacific League championships in 2006 and 2007, finished with a four-under-par 68. He finished seven strokes behind Adam Scott and Angel Cabrera. Scott and Cabrera went into a playoff with Scott capturing the title on the second hole.
Huh’s finest moment Sunday came on the 15th hole. He made an eagle on the par-five 530-yard hole. Huh finished with six birdies, eight pars, one eagle, two bogeys and a double-bogey Sunday.
Huh started the tournament Thursday with a two-under-70 before carding a 77 on Friday. He regrouped Saturday, shooting a 71.
“After Saturday, I knew I had to play my best if I wanted to come back next year,” Huh said. “I learned a lot about course management and that you have to be committed to every single shot out there.
“The course was in excellent shape despite it raining most of the day. I just went out there and stayed focused.”
Huh said he’s planning to take the next two weeks off before taking part in the Wells Fargo Championship, which will be played May 2-5 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C.
Huh will also take part later in the year in the remaining three major events — United States Open, British Open and PGA Championship. Huh took part in the British Open and PGA Championship last season.
“To be able to play in all four majors will be a cool thing,” Huh said. “It’s something that I look forward to doing and I think it will be real exciting.
“I have to continue going out there and playing my own game and putting up good numbers.”
