Glendale, Hoover swimming split Pacific League dual meet

GLENDALE — Entering Tuesday’s Pacific League finale, the Glendale High and Hoover swimming teams remained in search of their first victories of the season.

With plenty of pride on the line between the crosstown rivals, each team picked up a win at Hoover.

Glendale received two individual victories each from Jayson Wilia, Bijan Rezvani and Arthur Khachikyan to lead the boys’ team to a 103-66 win. Hoover’s girls’ team got two wins from Maggie Amirian to pick up a 95-80 victory.

Wilia paced the Nitros (1-5 overall and in league) with wins in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute 12.11 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 59.86.

Wilia had no trouble gearing up for the Tornadoes.

“We just wanted to come out and win this meet and leave with a good feeling,” said Wilia, who also helped Glendale win a pair of relays. “My starts were very good and I’ve been working with my club coach on my techniques.”

Rezvani won the 50 freestyle (23.84) and the 100 freestyle (53.91). Khachikyan posted first-place efforts in the 200 individual medley (2:16.73) and the 100 backstroke (1:04.52).

The trio worked with Manuk Piloyan to win the 200 medley relay (1:53.69) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:51.55).

Hoover (0-6 overall and in league) received two wins from Jason Barbar. Barbar won the 200 freestyle (1:56.6) and the 500 freestyle (5:19.6). Barbar also worked with Arik Abedi, Rodrick Karamkhodian and Hakop Bagumian to capture the 200 freestyle relay (1:44.7).

“It’s all about being able to go out there and pace yourself,” Barbar said. “The diving part of it helped me make my move.

“In the 500, it’s my best race because there’s a lot of endurance involved.”

In the girls’ portion of the meet, Amirian won the 100 freestyle (1:05.7) and the 50 freestyle (28.7) to help the Tornadoes improve to 1-5 overall and in league.

Amirian, a freshman, grouped with Se Yeon Kim, Lalageh Noubarentz and Annie Zakaryan to win the 200 medley (2:20.2).

Hoover Coach Kevin Witt said Amirian, who worked with Kim, Diana Magdesian and Palie Karamanougian to win the 200 freestyle relay in 2:05.4, is a big part of the team’s future.

“She’s somebody who we know we can look to down the road,” Witt said. “She’s very eager to learn and wants to win.

“She’s been improving throughout the season. She takes things seriously.”

Glendale (0-6 overall and in league) got a splendid outing from Maddie Corpuz. Corpuz won the 100 backstroke (1:12.44), 100 butterfly (1:09.53) and the 200 individual medley (2:30.97).

Corpuz also worked with Biyouregh Boghozian, Naira Sarkian and Vehik Gulabi to win the 400 freestyle relay in 4:30.24.

“It’s a good day for me, but I would have liked to have had the team win,” Corpuz said. “The rivalry always means a lot and it’s the meet to shine.”

Zakaryan won the 500 freestyle in 7:15..

Glendale got individual victories from Boghozian in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.22) and Rima Gasparyan in the 200 freestyle (2:31.56).
