Slew of locals make cut to CIF Southern Section Division finals

Six local schools participated Saturday in the CIF Southern Section Division prelims at various locations across Southern California. The following is a roundup of those who advanced to the CIF finals next Saturday.

DIVISION I

BOYS

Crescenta Valley and Glendale at Trabuco Hills High: Michael Davis of Glendale and Gabe Collison of Crescenta Valley punched their tickets to the division finals on Saturday at Mount San Antonio College.

Davis, who advanced to the state meet in the 200-meter dash last season, clocked 21.41 in the event Saturday to take third. He finished second in 10.59 in the 100.

Collison finished ninth in the 3,200 in 9 minutes 30.83 seconds.

GIRLS

Crescenta Valley at Trabuco Hills High: Kayleigh Carrillo and Megan Melnyk qualified for the Division I finals on Saturday. Carrillo was third in the 400-meter race in 56.95 seconds. Melnyk took seventh in the 800 (2 minutes 16.63 seconds).

Crescenta Valley’s 4x400 relay team took ninth in 3:56.24.

DIVISION III

BOYS

St. Francis at Estancia High: St. Francis’ Caleb Simmeth qualified in the 110-meter high hurdles and 300 high hurdles to reach the division finals at Mount San Antonio College. Simmeth finished sixth in the 110 (time not available) and eighth in the 300 (time not available).

Hoover did not have anybody make it out of the prelims.

DIVISION IV

BOYS

Flintridge Prep at Carpinteria High: The Rebels advanced three individuals in three events.

Junior Alan Yoho will move into next week’s divisional championships at Mt. San Antonio College after taking third in the 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes 20.80 seconds. Yoho was also sixth in the 3,200 (9:35.58).

Senior West Nowotny also tied for second in the shot put at 49 feet 4 1/2 inches with Oaks Christian’s Zack Bornstein, behind Grace Brethren’s Sullivan Wall (49-9). Pole vaulter Barrett Weiss tied for first with a mark of 12 feet.

GIRLS

Flintridge Prep and Flintridge Sacred Heart at Carpinteria High: A group of local athletes qualified to the divisional finals next Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.

Flintridge Prep’s Kate Evans finished ninth in the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 14.74 seconds, while Miah Webb took sixth in the 400 (59.24).

Flintridge Sacred Heart’s Kayla Montgomery was also fifth in the 400 (58.48). Madzie McVaugh took sixth in the high jump at 5 feet. Flintridge Sacred Heart’s 4x100- and 4x400 relay teams finished seventh and fifth, respectively.
