Vanes Martirosyan stops Ryan Davis in 2nd round
Vanes “Nightmare” Martirosyan touched down in Texas on Wednesday, returned to the boxing ring Saturday and five minutes and change of ring time later, he had impressively taken care of business just as many had predicted and he had promised.
Martirosyan, ranked fifth in the world by The Ring Magazine, overwhelmed Ryan Davis on Saturday at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, stopping the journeyman via technical knockout at the 2:01 mark of the second round in their super welterweight bout.
“He stuck to the plan,” said Roma Kalantaryan, who cornered Martirosyan, along with Freddie Roach. “He didn’t mess around and he got right to the point.”
Glendale’s Martirosyan remained unbeaten in his career, improving his sterling record to 33-0-1 with his 21st knockout.
“He hurt him in the first round and then he finished him in the second round,” said Kalantaryan, who heads up Martirosyan’s training at the Main Event Sports Club in Glendale.
Martirosyan floored Davis twice in the second round with the second ending the fight.
“The first one, [he knocked him down with] a right, the second time it was a combination,” Kalantaryan said.
And then Martirosyan walked away victorious, having laid waste to Davis (24-10-3) by earning his fourth stoppage victory in his last six fights.
Martirosyan’s previous fight in November of 2012 was a disappointing ninth-round technical draw against Erislandy Lara that was fought for a World Boxing Council light middleweight title shot in an HBO main event.
On Saturday, Martirosyan made his return, having recovered from a cut that was caused by a Lara head butt and ended their fight and a subsequent broken thumb that canceled a previously scheduled bout.
Only this time, he was on the untelevised portion of an “HBO After Dark” card.
Martirosyan, who also trains under Roach at the Wild Card Boxing Gym, made quick work of Davis in what he previously referred to as a fight “to keep me busy.”
Nevertheless, just as Martirosyan confidently predicted leading up to the fight, he won and he won impressively. And now, as the former United States Olympian posted on Twitter after the bout, there are hopefully, “bigger things to come.”
