Former Flintridge Sacred Heart standout Jenna Orlandini keeps digging for Huskies

The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level.

Jenna Orlandini (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2009) senior libero, University of Washington women’s volleyball: Orlandini, a former All-Area honoree, has helped keep the surging Huskies near the top of the NCAA Division I rankings.

Washington, ranked sixth in the nation, had won three matches in a row entering Wednesday’s Pacific Athletic Conference-12 contest against visiting California. Orlandini has played a key role for the Huskies (13-1, 5-1 in conference).

Orlandini finished with 21 digs to help the Huskies post a 25-21, 25-22, 25-16 home conference victory against Arizona State on Sunday. Earlier, Orlandini registered 14 digs and six assists in Washington’s 25-10, 25-20, 21-25, 25-20 conference home win against Arizona on Friday.

Orlandini has notched a team-best 199 digs in 49 games. She’s averaging 4.06 digs per set and has chipped in 42 assists.

Following a conference home contest against Stanford on Sunday, Orlandini will return to Los Angeles for a pair of conference matches. Washington will take on UCLA on Oct. 25, followed by a match against USC on Oct. 27.

Zane Archer (Glendale High, 2008) senior linebacker, Chapman University football: While the Panthers continue to put up eye-popping numbers on offense, they have received a boost on defense from Archer.

Archer, who also played at Glendale Community College before transferring to Chapman, has recorded 16 tackles in four games for the undefeated Panthers.

The Panthers are averaging 57.3 points per game, en route to their best start since 1996. That season, Chapman started 5-0 before finishing 7-2.

In Chapman’s 61-21 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, Archer finished with three tackles. Against visiting Whittier College on Oct. 5., Archer registered five tackles in Chapman’s 72-40 conference home victory.

Chapman (4-0) will meet host Occidental College in conference action at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Ryan McAleenan (St. Francis High, 2012) freshman linebacker, College of the Canyons football: Things continue to go well for McAleenan and the Cougars, who have won five consecutive games.

McAleenan, a former All-Area and All-Mission League pick, helped set the tone defensively for Canyons in its most recent outing. He finished with six tackles in Canyons’ 37-14 Northern Conference National Division home contest against Antelope Valley. McAleenan also had a sack for a loss of 17 yards.

In Canyons’ divisional 42-14 home win against Bakersfield on Oct. 5, McAleenan had three tackles. It marked the first time since 2008 that Canyons topped Bakersfield.

In five games, McAleenan has recorded 38 tackles. He’s averaging 6.3 tackles per contest.

Canyons will next face host Ventura in a division game at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Bryan Luna (Crescenta Valley High, 2011) sophomore linebacker, Pasadena City College football: It’s been a struggle throughout the first part of the season for the Lancers, who have lost their first six games.

Luna, a former All-Area and All-Pacific League standout, continues to try to make a difference for Pasadena. He’s tallied 25 tackles in six games. Luna had two tackles in Pasadena’s 45-10 nonconference home loss against Golden West.

The Lancers, who also feature Hoover High player Craig Settles (15 tackles in six games), will next take on host Moorpark in a Northern Conference National Division contest at 6 p.m. Saturday.
