Sports Notebook: Andy Reid, Chiefs look to snap losing streak

The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene.

REID, CHIEFS

LOOK TO REGROUP

After beginning the season 9-0, the Kansas City Chiefs, who are coached by former Glendale Community College football player Andy Reid, have encountered a three-game losing streak. The recent struggles have coincided with the Chiefs falling out of first place in the AFC’s West Division.

Two of those defeats have come against the division-leading Denver Broncos, including a 35-28 home loss Sunday. The Broncos are 10-2 and own a tiebreaker over the Chiefs by virtue of winning both head-to-head meetings.

The Chiefs hold one of the two available wild-card spots with four games left in the regular season. They can sew up a playoff spot for the first time since 2010 with a victory Sunday against the host Washington Redskins and a loss or tie by the Baltimore Ravens or Miami Dolphins.

Reid, who played at Glendale college from 1976-77 and is in his first year with Kansas City after serving as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles the previous 14 seasons, said the Chiefs have the personnel to get back on track.

“I told the team this isn’t college football. This isn’t the end of the season,” Reid told the Associated Press. “Now it’s important that we get ourselves back and ready to go and finish the season like we’re capable of doing, and our guys, coaches and players, will do that.”

Kansas City will play three of its remaining four games on the road, beginning at 10 a.m. PDT Sunday against Washington (3-9). The Chiefs have won the past five games versus the Redskins, including a 14-6 victory in the last meeting in 2009.

Reid went 17-11 against Washington while coaching the Philadelphia Eagles.

“Stefan put the team on his back and he did so many great things,” Flintridge Prep Coach Antonio Harrison said. “He will be tough to replace.
