Quartet of Flintridge Prep water polo players honored

Backed by a strong and experienced quartet, the Flintridge Prep boys’ water polo team enjoyed another winning season and a run in the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs.

With Ethan Vandeventer, John Treinen, Carlo Sivilotti and Diego Delgado all on board, the Rebels had different options they could turn to in close matches and give opponents a handful.

For their respective bodies of work, Vandeventer, Treinen, Sivilotti and Delgado were bestowed with All-Prep League recognition. Vandeventer and Treinen were named to the first team, while Sivilotti and Delgado earned spots on the second team as voted on by the league’s six coaches.

“These were four players who all brought something to the table,” Flintridge Prep Coach Dan Hare said. “It was great to see them all perform well and contribute in so many different ways.”

Vandeventer, a senior driver considered by most as one of the top offensive players in the division, collected a team-leading 97 goals and 56 assists and added 53 steals. He finished with 17 postseason goals.

Treinen, a senior utility player, finished with 68 goals, 41 assists and 35 steals.

“Ethan had a great season right from the get-go,” Hare said. “He’s a four-time all-league player and he knew how to lead.

“With John, it was his first full season with us. He was the facilitator off the counter-attacks and was our emotional leader.”

Sivilotti, a senior hole/guard, had 22 goals and 21 assists despite missing 10 matches because of injury.

Delgado, a junior utility player, finished with 46 goals, 39 assists and 68 steals.

“When Carlo came back from his injury, that’s when we began to pick things up,” Hare said. “Diego has got that great vision in terms of making the right pass and finishing on a scoring chance.”

Flintridge Prep went 16-11 and 7-3 in league for third place and fell to second-seeded Los Altos, the division runner-up, in the quarterfinals after opening the postseason with a victory against Riverside Poly.
