BOYS’ SOCCER
Crescenta Valley wins Eagle Cup: Crescenta Valley continued its torrid start to the season by claiming the Eagle Cup on Saturday afternoon at the Lancaster Soccer Complex with a 0-0 (4-3 in penalty kicks) championship victory over Valencia Valencia following a 6-3 win against Knight.
“We were missing some key players to injuries today and it was a great opportunity for other young men to step in and really contribute to a team win,” said Falcons Coach Grant Clark, whose team is now 6-1-1. “We needed everyone today in that win. Any time a team can play a tournament and get to the final it is great for the team and provides a certain level of intensity to a game that is tough to match in other games. I am really proud of my boys.”
Goalie Chris Mardiroussian made a big save to put the Falcons up, 3-2, in PKs against Valencia. After both teams made their kicks in the fourth round, CV came up short in the final round, but Valencia’s final kicker hit the crossbar to lead to the win.
In the 6-3 win over Knight, Justin Wright turned in a monster performance, scoring a hat trick and adding an assist. Brian Ju, Daniel Eng and Matt Ryan also had goals, while Mardiroussian had an assist and three saves and Henry Barkhordarian, Shyan Chachi and Eric Hartoonian also had helpers.
Granada Hills 4, St. Francis 3: The Golden Knights fell in the consolation championship match of the Ralph Brandt Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Paolo Ramirez, Jake Anderson and Jason Carmody all scored for the Golden Knights (2-2-1), who lost to Granada Hills by a goal for the second time in the tournament.
St. Francis next plays in the Oceanside Nike High School Invitational on Dec. 27.
WRESTLING
Hoover at El Monte Tournament: The Tornadoes had four wrestlers place in the top four at the day-long tournament on Saturday.
Sebastian Ghouliance led the way for Hoover, winning the 182-pound championship.
David Nersisyan, who usually wrestles at 170 pounds, was runner-up at 152 pounds, while Jesse Martinez was third at 145 pounds and Joshua Lee was fourth at 220 pounds.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Canoga Park 31, Holy Family 27: Despite a strong effort from Melissa Chan, the Gaels fell in the Providence Tournament Saturday morning.
Chan paced Holy Family (0-6) with 10 points. Up next for Holy Family is a battle with Holy Martyrs on Friday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Glendale Community College 76, Victor Valley 50: The Vaqueros improved to 6-5 with a win Saturday at the San Diego City College Tournament.
Elsie Mejia’s game-high 21 points propelled GCC, which outscored Victory Valley, 44-21, in the first half. Samantha Pyros added 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Gabriela Beltran had six points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Also chipping in off the bench was Jessica Sanchez, who had 14 points and seven rebounds, and Selin Gomez, who had 10 points.
