Flintridge Sacred Heart's Sophia Coffey bestowed with All-CIF honors

A look at Sophia Coffey's numbers proved to be a strong indicator of what she brought to the court for the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy volleyball team each match this season.

Coffey offered a variety of skills and proved to be a force on offense and defense for the Tologs en route to them sharing the Mission League championship and advancing to the CIF Southern Section semifinals for the first time since 2007.

With the junior setter often dictating the pace with her astute court awareness, the Tologs proved to be a formidable team in league and CIF Southern Section Division I-A. Coffey finished with gaudy numbers that included 911 assists, 221 digs, 62 kills and 41 aces.

Coffey's contributions on the court earned her a spot on the division's All-CIF first team after the CIF Southern Section office released the top players from each of the 10 divisions Monday. It marked the first time Coffey received the prestigious accolade.

"It's really something I'm very excited to be a part of," said Coffey, who helped the Tologs finish 26-5, 9-1 in league, to split the league title with rival Harvard-Westlake. "It's a credit to my coaches and teammates helping me out.

"The goals coming into the season were to beat Harvard-Westlake and win league and we were able to do those things. We had a team that played to its full potential and we were able to get past the first round of the playoffs."

Flintridge Sacred Heart reached the semifinals before falling in four games to champion La Salle.

Flintridge Sacred Heart second-year Coach Ernest Banaag said Coffey showed improvement from last season.

"For me as a coach, I take pride in getting the girls ready for the next level," Banaag said. "Sophia listens and looked for ways to get better and she's an excellent player.

"When she's out on the court, you can see her leading by example. A lot of the players noticed that and they fed off that."

La Salle junior outside hitter Haley DeSales was named the division's player of the year.
