Sports Roundup: Glendale Community College men’s basketball wins tournament

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale Community College 80, San Diego Mesa College 71: The Vaqueros (12-2) captured the San Diego Mesa Tournament on Monday. It marked the second tournament the Vaqueros have won this season.

Glendale’s Emmett Duvall was named the tournament’s most valuable player and teammate Jalen Etienne was selected to the all-tournament team. The Vaqueros began the tournament Satuday with a 65-61 win against West Hills and then notched a 68-64 victory against Grossmont on Sunday.

The Vaqueros, who have won seven games in a row, lost Gor Plavchyan to an apparent hairline fracture on his wrist in Sunday’s game. According to Glendale assistant Coach Vigen Jilizian, Plavchyan will likely miss at least four weeks.

Glendale will next play Jan. 8 in a Western State Conference South Division opener against host L.A. Valley.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Hoover 53, Norco 40: Argin Sarkissian had a team-high 19 points and Chris Sarkissian added 15 on Monday to spark the Tornadoes (9-3) in the consolation championship contest of the Whittier Tournament. On Saturday, Hoover picked up a 72-40 tournament win against La Puente 40: Chris Sarkissian scored a team-high 12 points. Teo Davidian, Argin Sarkissian and Kevin Nazari each had 11 points for Hoover.

Chatsworth 70, Flintridge Prep 33: The Rebels (3-5) got nine points each from Andrew Tsangeos and Stefen Chraghchian on Monday in a consolation contest of the Santa Barbara Tournament.

In a tournament game Saturday, Flintridge Prep picked up a 47-39 victory against San Marino. Dante Fregoso had 16 points to lead the Rebels.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

La Salle 50, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 34: Jenna Tran finished with 11 points Monday for the Tologs (5-9) in the fifth-place game of the La Cañada High Tournament. Casey Johnson and Camilla Homans had seven points each for Flintridge Sacred Heart.

St. Paul 54, Glendale 46: The Nitros (6-8) fell Monday in a West Coast Classic game at Burroughs High.

Valencia Valencia 36, Crescenta Valley 23: Crescenta Valley (8-4) suffered a defeat Monday in the West Coast Classic at Burroughs High.

Fulton 35, Holy Family 31: Charisse Talaro collected 15 points Monday for the Gaels (1-10) in a consolation contest of the Grant Tournament. Talaro was selected to the all-tournament team. In a tournament game Saturday, Rianne Sanchez finished with nine points in a 50-26 defeat against Van Nuys.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Santa Fe Christian 7, Flintridge Prep 1: The Rebels (4-2-3) fell Saturday in the consolation championship match of the Ontario Christian Tournament despite missing several starters for various reasons.

Chelsea Johnson of Flintridge Prep earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
