Roundup: Crescenta Valley volleyball wins tournament

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Crescenta Valley wins San Gabriel Tournament: The Falcons captured the two-day event Saturday with a 25-18, 25-22 victory against Downey Calvary Chapel in the title contest at San Gabriel High.

Crescenta Valley reached the title match with a 25-17, 25-23 semifinal win against Pacific League rival Burbank. The Falcons earned a 25-19, 25-12 quarterfinal win against Canyon Country Canyon after earning a 21-15, 25-19, 25-17 victory against Montebello.

In pool-play matches Friday, the Falcons got a 25-17, 24-26, 15-10 win against Brentwood. They also earned pool-play victories against Glenn (25-19, 25-22) and Rio Hondo Prep (25-20, 20-13)) at Alhambra High.

It’s a cool thing,” said Crescenta Valley Coach John Nelson, whose team improved to 10-0 and won the program’s first tournament since capturing the Culver City Tournament in 2005.

Crescenta Valley senior setter Chris Han was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Crescenta Valley junior outside hitters Min Kim and Raymond Barsemian were named to the all-tournament team.

St. Genevieve 3, Flintridge Prep 2: The visiting Rebels (6-4) fell, 25-16, 17-25, 26-28, 25-23, 16-18 in a nonleague match Monday. Dante Fregoso had 26 kills for the Rebels, who got 17 from Trip Westmoreland.

BOYS’ TENNIS

St. Francis 18, Crespi 0: Host St. Francis picked up a Mission League victory Monday at Fremont Tennis Center. The Golden Knights improved to 7-1, 1-1 in league.

SOFTBALL

Westridge 2, Flintridge Prep 1: The host Rebels fell Monday in their Prep League opener. Flintridge Prep (2-5) got two hits from Chae Kim and starting pitcher Therese Oshiro struck out 10. Drew Montgomery drove in a run for the Rebels.
