Glendale Community College tennis teams net good results

A few days after suffering a knee injury, Alexandra Amor returned to the court Friday looking to pair with partner Viktoriya Shumakova in their quest to capture the Western State Conference doubles championship in Ventura County.

Amor, a member of the Glendale Community College women’s tennis team, had injured herself Tuesday during Glendale’s 5-0 defeat against Orange Coast in an opening-round match of the Southern California Regionals. She wanted to come back Friday with something significant at stake.

Amor and Shumakova saw their quest for conference glory come up just short, as they suffered a 6-1, 6-3 defeat against Santa Monica’s Jessica Goldbeck and Kaori Tsuda in the title match at Ventura College.

“They gave it their all,” Glendale first-year Coach Deo Sy said. “Ally’s knee just hampered her throughout.

“She gave everything she had in the semifinal match and then she just aggravated her knee injury early on in the finals. Ally and Viktoriya did well just to get here.”

In their semifinal match, Amor and Shumakova posted a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory against Mary Katherine Ashmore and Victoria Mamatova of Santa Monica. The Vaquero duo had already qualified for the season-ending Ojai Tournament, which will begin April 24.

Glendale’s other doubles team of Meghedi Mooradian and Ashley Sumudio fell, 7-3, 6-3, in a semifinal match to Goldbeck and Tsuda. However, they had also locked up a berth to advance to Ojai.

“They elevated their game and did their best,” Sy said of Mooradian and Sumudio. “Their opponents also elevated their game.”

In men’s action, the Vaqueros, who lost to Mount San Jacinto in the first round of the Southern California Regionals on Tuesday, had a pair of doubles team compete Friday at Ventura College in Hosep Orojian and Santiago Segovia and Clayton Pauff and Cameron Braun.

In the back draw bracket, Pauff and Braun registered a 6-2, 6-0 win against Lucky Campos and Nathan Gonzalez of Bakersfield to qualify for Ojai.

Orojian and Segovia, who helped the Vaqueros win their first conference championship since 2005, fell, 7-5, 6-1, to Bakersfield’s Tim Roe and Samuel Ramirez in a semifinal match. Orojian and Segovia had already qualified for Ojai, as well.

“Hosep and Santiago lost that tough first set and sometimes it’s just too tough to come back from something like that,” Glendale Coach Bob MacKay said. “They have gotten a lot of good experience and they will look to move forward.

“With Clayton and Cameron, they did a good job and his will also be a confidence boost for both of them. Plus, they will get more exposure since they are freshmen.”
