Sports Roundup: Glendale Community College women shine at Mt. SAC Relays

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College at Mt. SAC Relays: There were quite a few banner efforts for the Vaqueros at Saturday’s meet in Walnut.

Sophomore Justice Shank had the honor of delivering her team’s lone victory by winning the high jump with a leap of 1.66 meters.

Besides triumphs, Glendale also notched four additional top-three finishes, paced by sophomore Elizabeth Nelson, who took the silver in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4 minutes, 35.6 seconds.

The Vaqueros duo of Ana Tonga and Nicole Pappelis both placed high in the javelin, as Tonga was second, with a toss of 34.51 meters, just ahead of Pappelis’ third-place throw of 34.47 meters.

Lizette Gonzalez also took third in the 800-meter run with a mark of 2:15.07, which edged out freshman teammate Glidyll Mancia (2:16.64), who was fourth.

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College at Mt. SAC Relays: The Vaqueros posted three top-five finishes at Saturday’s invitational in Walnut.

Two-sport star Tanner Mays finished second in the javelin with a toss of 56.82 meters to lead the way for the Vaqueros.

Sophomore distance runner Edwardo Vasquez was third in the 1,500-meter run with a mark of 4 minutes, 0.54 seconds, while leaper Marcus Streeter was fifth in the high jump with a height of 2.02 meters.

BASEBALL

St. Francis 3, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 2: The host Golden Knights scored three runs in the fifth and held on for their first Mission League victory of the season at Brookside Park on Friday evening.

With the win, St. Francis improved to 5-9 overall and 1-7 in league and snapped a 12-game league losing streak that dated back to April 23 of last year.
