Sports Roundup: Hoover High baseball takes down Burbank
BASEBALL
Hoover 5, Burbank 4: The Tornadoes clinched their biggest Pacific League of the season on Tuesday afternoon in defeating visiting Burbank.
Junior pitcher Jonathan Ramos improved to 2-1 in league and 4-2 overall after tossing a complete-game victory in allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits, while striking out three.
Junior Fidel Hernandez led the way offensively for Hoover (9-6, 2-3 in league) by going three for three with a triple, home run and two runs batted in.
Scott Yzarnotegui was one for three with two RBI and Ethan Turpin finished two for three with two doubles.
“It was a great effort from Jonathan and a good win for us,” Hoover Coach Brian Esquival. “This was our biggest win in league.”
Hoover next travels to Stengel Field on Friday for a 7 p.m. game versus Crescenta Valley.
Flintridge Prep 2, Rio Hondo Prep 0: The Rebels snapped a four-game winless streak with a well-pitched performance in a Prep League road victory on Tuesday.
Rebels starting pitcher Brendan McKiernan (3-2) went the distance in scattering four hits and fanning eight versus one walk.
“It was a big improvement for Brendan,” Rebels Coach Guillermo Gonzalez said. “He was hitting his spots and had a lot of movement on his fastball.”
Hamilton Evans was two for three with two runs for Flintridge Prep (7-5-1, 3-2), while senior Michael Weinstein was two for four with two RBI.
Pasadena 4, Glendale 0: The Nitros lost in heartbreaking fashion in their bid to upset first-place Pasadena on Tuesday at home.
Glendale, which dropped to 5-10-1, 2-3 in the Pacific League, got six innings of four-hit, shutout ball by Ethan Howard before he was relieved before the seventh, in which the Bulldogs scored all of their runs for the win.
Crescenta Valley 10, Muir 0: Pitchers Tanner Carrico and Joe Torres combined for the two-hit shutout, with Carrico striking out nine over four innings.
Bryan Wang had three hits and a run batted in, while Michael Russo had two hits, including a home run, and Adrian Damla also had a pair of hits.
The Falcons are 11-7 and 4-1 in the Pacific League, tied for second with Arcadia a game behind Pasadena.
SOFTBALL
Glendale 13, Pasadena 0 (five innings): Jordan Lousararian went the abbreviated distance, allowing four hits and striking out six for the Pacific League road victory on Tuesday.
Offensively, Grace Sinisterra was two for three with three runs batted in and Eden Marzucco also had two hits to go with two RBI for the Nitros (11-3, 3-2 in league).
Burbank 11, Hoover 1 (five innings): Jenesy Gonzalez doubled in teammate Alex Mendoza in the fourth inning to account for the Tornadoes’ lone run on Tuesday afternoon in Pacific League play.
With the defeat, Hoover dropped to 5-4 overall and 1-4 in league.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Crescenta Valley 13, Burroughs 5: The host Falcons picked up a Pacific League win Tuesday.
Crescenta Valley (8-3, 6-2 in league) got a doubles sweep from Albert Chtchyan and Alex Jang (6-1, 6-2, 6-2).
BOYS’ GOLF
St. Francis 183, Chaminade 214: Michael Finney carded a one-under-par 34 on Tuesday to earn medalist honors for the Golden Knights in a Mission League match at Woodland Hills Country Club.
St. Francis (8-4, 7-3 in league) received 35s from Johnny Brandt and Michael Mozilo and a 38 from Tommy Altmayer.
On Monday, St. Francis captured the Lompoc Easter Invitational.
Mozilo carded an even-par 73 to secure medalist honors at the event at La Purisima Golf Course.
St. Francis received an 80 from Finney and an 88 for Stian Lintvedt to finish at 241 and win by four strokes.
La Cañada 189, Crescenta Valley 195, Alemany 215: David Holeman carded a three-over-par 37 on Tuesday for Crescenta Valley in a nonleague tri-match at La Cañada Country Club.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Glendale Community College 7, Ventura College 1: Brent Sakurai had three hits and scored a pair of runs Tuesday for the visiting Vaqueros (19-12) in a nonconference contest.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Citrus College 4, Glendale Community College 3: Host Glendale fell in the second game of a Western State Conference Blue Division doubleheader at the Glendale Sports Complex on Tuesday. The Vaqueros suffered a 10-1 loss in the first game, called in the fifth inning because of the mercy rule.
