Alex Theatre getting animated with cartoon festival

Locals in search of entertainment immediately after Christmas Day can begin Saturday, Dec. 26, with the annual “Greatest Cartoons Ever!” festival at the Alex Theatre in Glendale.

Hosted by the Alex Film Society, the show will include a wide range of cartoons from the classic era of the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s, as chosen by animation historian Jerry Beck and animation director Frank Gladstone. The lineup includes such highlights as 1953’s “Duck Rabbit Duck,” with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, the 1938 Fleischer Studios’ Popeye cartoon “Goonland,” and 1947’s “Cat Concerto” starring Tom and Jerry.

The festival is in its 21st year and appears in two showings at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. General admission is $16; seniors, students and children $12. There will be a raffle to support the Alex Film Society, which next brings to the theater the Humphrey Bogart classic “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” on Feb. 18
