City Briefs: Riverwalk cleanup slated; celebrity poker, bingo tournament to benefit Renal Support Network

A “Riverwalk Workday” will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Glendale Narrows Riverwalk, 300 Paula Ave.

Participants should wear sturdy shoes, long pants, protective clothing, a hat and sunscreen as they join others in weeding and maintaining the landscaped areas along the Los Angeles River in Glendale.

Everyone must sign a waiver prior to working. Minors must provide a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

The fifth annual California Council of the Blind’s “Mutt Strut” 2K/5K Run/Walk will be held on Saturday at Crescenta Valley Park, 3901 Dunsmore Ave., La Crescenta. The event will be held near the dog park.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with the run/walk starting at 9 a.m.

Proceeds benefit the council, which provides services to Californians with vision loss as well as City of Hope for cancer prevention and diabetes research.

The La Crescenta Woman’s Club will hold an antique and collectible event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the group’s clubhouse, 4004 La Crescenta Ave.

At the event, representatives from Crown City Antiques will estimate the value of any item brought in by guests. Cost for an evaluation is $5 per item.

There will also be vendors selling items. Proceeds benefit local schools and the community.

The Renal Support Network’s sixth annual “Beat the Odds” Celebrity Charity Texas Hold ’Em and Bingo Tournament will be held from 5 to 11 p.m. on Saturday in the Glendale Civic Auditorium, 1401 N. Verdugo Road.

Celebrities taking part will include actor Jack Black, Phillip Palmer, anchor of ABC Eyewitness News and poker emcee and producer/actor Ann Lopez, who will be the bingo emcee.

This is the network’s main fundraiser. The organization hosts several efforts in the community to raise awareness about kidney health and organ donation. One of its biggest events is the annual Renal Prom, held in January, which is a free event for older teens.

Poker and bingo seating is limited, so advance purchase of tickets, which cost $125 each, is encouraged by visiting rsnhope.org/celebrity-bingo-poker.

The price includes dinner, drinks, dessert, free parking and game play.

A fundraiser for the 101st Glendale Rose Parade Float, with the theme “Everything Is Coming Up Roses,’ will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Ard Eevin Estate, 851 W. Mountain St., Glendale.

There will be cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and opportunity drawings for parade seats and prizes.

Also at the event, the Glendale Community College Vocal Jazz Ensemble will debut the custom Rose Float song.
